Brake Question

This is a stupid question but I can't seem to phrase it right to get the answer on yahoo. There are two pairs of brake pads in the front brake pads I bought. One pair with clips and one without. Which pair do I use? Why are there two pairs?

Put the pad with the clip on the caliper side (inner) on each side of the car. Thats the warning indicator which alerts you when your pads are wearing out.

Actually, I heard a better advice somewhere. Put the one pad with the wear indicator where the old most worn pad was. For me, it's the right inside one. Also, I usually have only one pad with the brake wear indicator out of 4. Are we talking about the same thing?
