Nissan VQ On Ward's 10 Best, 12 Years Running

Nissan's VQ engine wins Ward's Ten Best AGAIN, for the 12th year in a row. It is the only engine to ever have achieved the award every year since the award's conception.

The only car the feature the VQ in every one of those years? Maxima.

Note: Forgive me if this is a repost, I searched using google (domain: foums.maxima.org) first.

JwaxMax99 Dec 13, 2005 07:28 PM

Yea, impressive. :D
Is there a category for transmissions? :rotz:

http://smiliesftw.com/!/turbobowdown_11.gif VQ engine! :festive: 12th year!

bigEL Dec 13, 2005 10:18 PM

For an encore, I think Nissan should graft 2 VQs together.

icewake Dec 13, 2005 11:30 PM

vq is just a well built motor. cant beat it

carsarecool Dec 14, 2005 06:15 AM

mine started like crap this morning, its got 73,000 miles so it probly wont run for that much longer anyway. i think im gonna scrap it and drop the GM iron pushrod 2200 in there from a 97 sunfire, i hear its got 110 ft/lbs at 5300 rpm.

JClaw Dec 14, 2005 06:29 AM

Good luck with the sunfire. Can't go wrong with a GM econobox :loser:

You do know that there are people here whose VQs are well into the 200K mile region. A lot of people with 100K+ are still running strong.

carsarecool Dec 14, 2005 07:31 AM

hahahaha, im obviously kidding dude, i love this engine, im thinking of keeping this car for a few hundred thousand miles provided the tranny doesnt go, i was just joking that i would scrap a VQ with ONLY 73000 miles (hardly broken in) for the crap 2.2 pushrod thats the base engine in the chevy S10 and sunfire.

JClaw Dec 14, 2005 07:35 AM

I think someone on here had around 420,000 miles on his VQ30...

carsarecool Dec 14, 2005 07:39 AM

sweet, my friend just got a 97 max with 145000 on it and its as quiet and smooth as if it came right out of the factory, you cant hardly hear it at any RPM and it doesnt shake at all.

:sprint:

same here..i have about 145,xxx on mine and still running strong!

Tatanko Dec 14, 2005 12:40 PM

120,000 here and still running smoother than ever.

I have an ad for the VQ in Automobile magazine sitting right here next to me, in fact.

The problem is that you never know these days.... sometimes people really mean it.

PHAT6 Dec 14, 2005 04:21 PM

VQ'S ARE THE BOMB!

But since we all drive or have driven Maximas/I30's/Cefiros etc. etc. here - we all know that.

My 1996 SE has 137,000miles on the clock and only a cracked right front CV boot, rear left brake light and little LED lights in the rear wing not working are the only things that have ever gone wrong - notice none have to do the engine...yeah!

:mardi: 4 EVER!

tripleGmax Dec 15, 2005 09:29 AM

u cant say bomb.

I wonder how they decided on the G35 6mt when the engine is in 80% of Nissan's lineup.

Because it was car of the year in 03? :gotme: I agree though ... :wtf:

Nissan 6 Dec 15, 2005 12:07 PM

Everyday when I drive my car I sit 4 feet away from one of the greatest engines ever made :D

tripleGmax Dec 15, 2005 12:35 PM

now youre the bomb

That is sig. material right there :sprint:

PHAT6 Dec 15, 2005 01:06 PM

Off Topic a bit but is it just me but does the VQ35DE not sound as good under heavy acceleration as the VQ30DE it replaced?

BTW Nissan6, Freeway is spot on mate: SERIOUS SIGNATURE MATERIAL!

YOU DA BOMB! (Hate spelling words incorrectly...argh)

GBAUER Dec 15, 2005 01:07 PM

They obviously haven't looked into the long-term durability of the VQ35! Blowing oil in the maximas, blowin' engines in the Z's. I'm really not impressed with the 3.5. I might be the first person to downgrade his 5.5 gen to a 5.0 gen!

carsarecool Dec 15, 2005 01:20 PM

the 3.5 in the Z's blow sometimes?

It sounds better IMO. You just need to have the right set-up.

Seriously dude?!

That's an eye opener big time. (Sorry admin for off-topic).

Personally would like to get the Tomei Racing 3.3litre engine stroker on my VQ30DE for more power and torque. :)

anthunny Dec 15, 2005 01:45 PM

VQ lacks top end

Anthunny you can install variable intake (MEVI and or 00VI) that will compensate for the 5,500rpm deadline (not redline) that VQ's are made stock with. They can boost you by up to 30bhp at the crank when you hit 5,000rpm.

I understand that Nissan is coming out with 07VI-T for the R35 GTR. That should cure any top end worries if we can mod it to our Maximas.

It is a pretty vague post mate.

Nmexmax - do you live on your computer? I post and you counter-post a minute later. And often it's to do this to my posts: :nutkick: LOL.

Just like the statement on how 5.5s with bolt-ons can barely get into the 13s?

shouldn't you be out in the parking lot adding oil to your car or something?

Look, don't get me wrong, I love the power of the VQ. I love the way it revs. I love the way it sounds. I love the way it keeps on going (just crossed the 140k mile marker on my 2003). I DON'T love the oil consumption.

Rebuild it using the AEBS kit :ben:

AEBS kit? what's that? Do you mean the 4.3L stroker kit? What's the point? Everything I've read about it makes it sound like a really great way to waste 7k. I'll rebuild it with aftermarket rings, titanium valves and new seals everywhere. Then, just for kicks, I'll add 15 lbs of boost, a new Engine Management unit, and bigger injectors. After all that, I'll take my extra grand and go to the nearest strip club for the best three hours of my life!
