down shift on a auto

do any of you down shift on a auto?
would it be ok for the tranny if i down shifted while flooring the car?
im sayint this becasue today on my way to school, i got smoked by a fx35, he was trying to pass me, but when i floored it, i guess i still was in 3rd gear, it didnt do jack ****, while i see this old man blowing past me... right then and there, i was thinking "i HATE auto, if i would of had a manual, i could of easily down shifted to 2nd and smoked his old as$."
i bet that guy was laughing , "hahaha, that maxima is mega slow!!", when its actually not.

any one wanna trade their 6 speed for an auto?

No, that's what harms your tranny if you column shift it, the forced downshifting. Upshifting is fine, can do no damage, but downshifting when the transmission isn't prepared for it isn't good.

Either drive it like it's meant to be driven, or get a 5/6MT car/tranny.

As long as youre off the gas pedal and in the proper speed range, downshifting is ok.

If you floored it and nothing happened, I'd say something's wrong. My 5.5 gen has been known to drop from 4th to 2nd if I really get on the gas. Will you car blow up if you do this manually by moving the shifter? Probably not (assuming yours has the electronic transmission, rather than a direct link). You can move your shifter around all you want, but the transmission won't shift unless the TCU decides it's safe.

P.S. Next time, if someone's trying to pass you, just let him pass. In the eyes of the law, you intentionally speeding counts as road rage.

The car should downshift itself if you floor it. Even my 88 would drop down a gear or two if I floored it. But yeah it won't harm your tranny to "manually" downshift, just as long as the speed is appropriate for the lower gear.

All your posts are invalid because it all depends on what speed you were at

if it did downshift twice.... the RPM's might get too high and you might over rev the car...... or the tranny was thinking that there is no pint to downshift to gain 5 MPH (or 3 seconds) then shift again

If you drop the gas pedal and step on it again it will downshift... You may use O/D button too or as the guys mentioned, if you are at the right speed, dropping it to 2nd won't do any harm... I would stay away from dropping it to 1st... Watch the RPMs!!

Hehe, good one

FX45 is V8 with some 315HP and 330ft-lbs and could give you a good run

I downshift my transmission constantly w/o any trouble. Just make sure it's in the right speed, no 60MPH second gear drops or you'll hit rev-limiter, and probably screw something up. But if I'm in a race, say from a 40MPH roll, I'll drop it down to "2" which'll get me up to 3-4k RPM, so all I'll have to do is take it to WOT and it's all instanteous, no need for the transmission to lag and downshift. Or if I'm going from a dig, take it to "1" and if I lose traction, just feather the gas. Usually if you'd do that from "3" or "D", the transmission would upshift and cause you to bog. But in "1", you can regain traction faster w/o having the transmission screw you up, and when you're ready to go on, just take it up to "3" and let the transmission take care of the rest.

There's nothing ricer/wrong about utilizing your torque/powerband properly, even in an automatic.

At that speed, it depends if you have a 4AT or 5AT.. And the TCM/ECU will not let you downshift if the speed isn't optimal, or safe, the lever will go still to into the selected gear, but the transmission wont shift into it until a reasonable speed is reached.

Sometimes one must do this if you've altered your powerband in any way.

It's also not entirely the same engine.

If you're car was at the corssover of 2nd and third, and did not go into 2nd, that would mean a speed in excess of ~67mph, and so your statement above is invalid,(shift int 2nd in the 6MT) unless you want it revving at or past rev limit (6500-6700)
.

I'd be interested if it has a black interior...oh, wait. You're car is slow and got beat by a FX35. Sorry, not interested any more.

Maybe you should think about converting it to a manual.

since i installed headers, exhaust, y pipe, intake, and new ecu, my auto vg30e downshifts like crazy!!!

to be safe, i wouldnt force any sort of shifting on an automatic; ive seen a lot of fast, beautiful automatics ruined by this.

plus...it really doesnt do anything...it takes too long to catch between gears.

just upgrade your car; intake is easiest/cheapest

Let's do the math...

245HP VQ35 (don't tell me it's 255, it's not) @ 3250lbs.

v.

280HP VQ35 @ 4100lbs

Comparing power and weight, the FX has about a 16HP disadvantage against your car.

It's 850lbs heavier. For every 50lbs you lose ~3HP. If we were to apply that to this comparison, you see how I come up with the FX having that disadvantage.

Now here's another thing, the 3HP loss figure isn't concrete. It's estimated to be between 2-3HP. If it were 2HP, then the FX is at no disadvantage at all and puts down 246HP relative to the weight of your car.

my car shifted into 3rd gear at 75 MPH.......i used to downshift it at 70 MPH.....i just love the sound when the motor revs to the redline..i just love to make it scream... but then again.. that is probably why my tranny is ruined!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I downshift my 2k1 autotragic a lot, but just make sure the gear is engage before stepping on it. If you pull the pedal to the metal and downshift at the same time your going to destroy the tranny pretty quick, downshifting can be very helpfull when vroom vrooming but do it sequentially.
