anyone tried putting full car vinyl sticker?

yeah I am sick of my beige color maxima and I really want to change the color but a full paint job would cost more than 2 grand. So I remembered about the episode on pimp my ride where they put a huge vinyl sticker on a car. I was wondering if anyone has every tried to do this? How much does it cost? and where could I get a vinyl sticker that is big enough and durable enough to cover a car?

Here is a useful post. Don't try to imitate anything you see on "Pimp My Ride."

Unless you are thinking about putting a popcorn popper or goldfish tank in your car.

fine...forget the fact that this was on pimp my ride

...what are the disadvantages of covering the entire car with a solid color vinyl? are they not durable enough? do they not work good with different weather?

It would need to be of very high quality. It would probably look good for a while but when small knicks start to appear it will be very noticable and hard to fix.

The cost of having one put on I'm sure would be more than a good wash, wax, and shine.

Save up for a full re-paint if your car is that bad.

thanks for the help...I think Ill just stick to my paint if that is the case. I was really hoping for a good substitute to a paint job.

Why not just take your car to a maaco or something, if you want to change the color. I wouldn't suggest the vinyl as it would likely take an as$ kicking from debris (front end) as well as from the weather.

Shoot, I’d love to see how my car would have looked in a deep metalic blue.

I see it this way....putting a full vinyl treatment on a car is like dating an ugly chick. No matter how much make-up and fancy clothes you put on that heiffer, it's still a heiffer.

Or you could see it this way:

Your dating a really sexy chick, and you decide to buy her a dress. Now she might look real good in a size 6., but she would look slamming in a size 4.

I’m sure we could all agree that in general stickers are rice, they are needlessly amateur attempts at getting attention.

But why couldn’t vinyl be used to archive a clean look?

Nissan did use a flat vinyl on the door moldings on the 4th gen, and when new they were new they didn’t look bad. And they did a very good job of preserving the paint underneath.

Could see why I couldn’t use a clear vinyl on my hood and front bumper. Would probably work the same as the 3M clear bra, but cheaper and easier to remove and change.

Clear vinyl or inconspicuous vinyl for selective areas is much different than trying to substitute a paintjob with a vinyl sticker.

Bottom line of this thread is if you want to do it, do it. Dont let the opinions of others discourage you. Do you research and if you think it will be a great addition/mod to your car then go ahead and do it.

there are many examples in life when people didnt like the idea of something, thought it would be dumb and/or stupid then it turns out to be a hit and everyone jumps on the band waggon.

Its your life and your car, do with it what you want. And its a vinyl sticker if you dont like it, take it off!

I'm suprised at how smooth that vinyl actually looks. I was thinking it would have a funky texture or something, this thread has actually kind of turned around. I'd consider doing the vinyl thing to my Z, but not the metal flake crap.

If it's something you want to do, than do it, their are some great body graphics kits for cars out there, just google and do a search for them and do your homework and ask questions. I don't buy the line about nicks and stuff because the exact same damage can happen to new paint. It's your ride, do what you like....
