jumped a curb at 50mph

here is what happened...im driving down a 2 way 2 lane road (one lane going each way) at 1:30 AM. i dont know why but for some reason im doing 50 when the speed limit is 30 so this is very stupid on my part...suddenly there is one of those traffic divider triangle grass patches surrounded by a curb...there are no signs indicating it nor is there a sign indicating the road dividing up ahead...so the road curves left and by the time i realize it...i know for a fact im not going left doing 50...so i slam my brakes and jump onto the curb slide across the grass patch about 15ft sideways and then jump back down onto another road, then continue driving as if nothing just happened, except for the pile of shyt in my pants lol...i stopped the car in a gas station and check the undercarriage there is no sign of the car bottoming out...just some mud on my left front tire...thats about it. car feels fine so i believe everything is ok...basically is there any potential damage hitting a curb at 50 mph?

thanks

You were going 50 MPH and hit a curb and nothing happened? I doubt it unless the curb was really small or something....

Try to look at the inside wall of the tire, you may have a bubble starting to form from hitting the curb. Bent rim obviously, check the inside also. Let it sit and check for leaks. If you all this is fine, you ar eonle lucky ****

If nothing is apparently broken you should definitely take it in for an alignment.

It would be prudent to do a thorough visual inspection of the undercarriage.

If you hit a curb going 50 and nothing happened I would be VERY surprised. I hit a curb going like 5-10 mph and my tire blew out....

i am assuming that the curb was really small, because the car jumped on very easily and im sure it wasnt any higher because then the undercarriage would definately hit, and i already checked that it didnt

We just replaced the lower control arm on my friend's 01 Cougar, hydroplaned into a curb doing 25 and bent that control arm crazy. It was basically shaped like a U, instead of sitting flat on the table, you could roll it back and forth.

i did see a friend go over a 6-8inch curb backwards at 40+ and up and over a median and down the other side and all he did was bend an exhaust tip, and his car was a pos, i dont get it. pure physics would say soemthing had to break/pop/bend

I hopped a curb at 20mph and needed an alignment as well as a new tire as my previous one had exploded. I also managed to dent my oil pan ($100 part...) but I think my suspension absorbed most of the damage...thank you Tokico!

Sounds like a thank you note to the city is in order. I've seen what hitting a curb at slow (15 mph) speeds can do. Your car would have probably been toast at 50.

Thank life's little nudges and adjust your headlight angle!

i checked all around...i checked all 4 tires inside and out for bubbles...there is no sign whatsoever of the undercarriage hitting, checked my rims, and drove on a straight road to try to determine in the car pulls to anyside signifying an alignment...everything is in check...what can i be expecting??

Oh, I hit a curb doing around 15 mph. Lets just say I don't want to talk about it. I blew out one tire and another got a bubble in it. That was with my stock suspension. With my KSports I would of needed a new bumper/fender.

Take the car to a good alignment shop and tell them you whacked a curb pretty hard. have them get it up on a lift and check it over for you... if nothing is wrong, the most it'll cost you is probably $20 or so for their time to look at it.. you'll then have the eyes of a trained professional on it and not a bunch of people on the 'net trying to tell an inexperienced person what to look for.

As for possible places of damage, obviously the tire/wheel could be damaged. also blown struts, bent springs (yes, I've seen it happen), damaged shock mounts, bent control arm or subframe, damaged sway bar, bent/cracked steering knuckle, bent steering linkage/tie rods, cracked ball joint or tie rod end......... lots of things could be wrong that's not visible to the naked eye..

most of them should be easy to inspect though once you get it on a lift and have an experienced tech looking at it.. the service manual has measurements of various mounting points and bolts on the chassis, so the shop can measure the frame to make sure it's square and nothing was seriously bent.

Unless the curb was very small or was one of those slanted half-curbs, then you WILL have suspension damage somewhere. it may not be apparent now, but it will show up at the most inopprotune time. like 6 months from now when you're on an off-ramp at 60mph and your steering knuckle collapses from the stress of the old impact, causing you to flip the car and nearly kill yourself in the process. (Talk to my buddy Blackandwhite about that one.)

That seems more reasonable. if you hit a curb at 50 you wouldnt be driving away.

don't hit the brakes. you just shift the weight to the wheels and make it 10x worse. those grassy medians are usually low and curvy, you can jump them with no problem.

i jumped one of those rubber lane dividers one time.. i had to change lanes so i did not paying attention they've put these rubbery huge things in the middle of the road to separate the exit.. i thought i was done for since it was high (really high) but i barelly felt it.

you gotta beware sidewalk cubs, those are the bad ones. the others are moron proof since they know morons (i know i know... ) will jump them

mmm... hopefully nothing was damage but as like everyone said get it up on a lift and have it inspected for sure.

But driving in NYC... I should be getting a alignment everytime I take the car out.

Have you ever hit a curb before at a slower speed? Its friggin loud, and harsh too, like going over a big pothole at 15-30 mph, and it really moves the car too. Grass shouldntve done anything but i'd still get it checked out, but think about it, if you were going 50 and actually hit a raised curb or concrete divider there would be some things WRONG with that car, i believe it startled you but whacking a big curb probly woulda scared the **** out of you big time, enough to stop right there and look at it

yea ur right, when i hit the grass, i guess just the moment of shock startled me, but the impact felt as if i hit a bad pothole, and i was able to continue driving as if nothing happened...basically i can take the whole ordeal as slamming into a pothole...i can recall hitting worse unavoidable shyt in NYC...my CD player skipped on this one, i recall times when stuff was tossed around my car and rear passengars hit their heads, but they didnt hit yesterday lol

A while back i was taking my dog to the vet and i was messing with her tryin to get her to lay down in the seat. i was on a 2 lane road and drifted (the direction right) off the road and jumped up the curb. nothing happened and i was only doing 30 max i got back on the road instantly , stearing and everything felt fine and never took my eyes off the road since.

must have been a small curb if nothing's wrong w/ your car. I would remove the wheels and look around for any damage

I hit a curb head on at about 30mph with my old Plymouth Sundance and all that happened was I lost a hubcap. I drove the car for another 100,000km and never had a problem. I was going fast enough that after I went over the curb, I had enough momentum to keep going 100 yards across a field with a foot of snow, and down over a curb on the other side of the field into a parking lot!
