Gearsets/Ratios
Gearsets/Ratios
I haven't been here in forever but another forum I'm on, they swap gears for different ratios. Why don't Maxima owners do this? What is needed in order to do this? I know the speedo will need to be recalibrated.
This can greatly increase the Maximas potential in the 1/4 and even on the highway. Just putting your power to more use.

It's been done. Fact is that the maxima gearing is already very aggressive as is, so the gains are not nearly as significant as you'd get from going with a 4.10 as opposed to a stock 2.83 like an Fbody might do. If your car comes with a competent gear ratio from the factory, there's not much need to change it.
If you change the final drive ratio (differential), then you'll need to recalibrate the speedo.
If you change the gearing in the tranny for different 1-2-3-4-5-6 spacing but keep the same final drive ratio, then you don't need to touch the speedo.

where does the speedo come from anyway? my old car, when i hit the brakes and ABS came on in the snow, the speedo would jump up and down cause the wheels were locking and unlocking, but in the max if i hit the gas in the snow and the fronts spin, the speedo goes up but if i hit the brakes, it just slows down and reads the speed of the car correctly
^ yup. That is what I was taught.
Another question. Just say there is a 4.77 ratio out that mounts in car A. Can it be put into car B even though it's another make and model? Are there limitations when swapping gearsets?

Yes there are limitations. You can't just switch any ring gear to any other ring gear, just like you can't go grab a Ferrari Enzo engine and slap it in your maxima. There are other final drives that work in the maxima though. Altima, Pulsar, Quest, etc. But they aren't much different than the stock one.
EDIT: just noticed you have a 2002... I have no idea what, if any, other final drives are available for the 6spd.
