Need help about UPS bill.
Need help about UPS bill.
Hi guys,
My brother bought a set of wheels and tires for his '00 Maxima last October. The seller was from Canada. and he shipped the wheels and tires to my work because my brother stay in school all day. Also no one's home during the day to pick up the packages. But last week, my boss gave me a bill from UPS for $62.89.
Well, in the bill the charges are:
........"
. US Customs Duties 11.39
. Govt. Charges Other Than Duties 25.00
. Brokerage Charges 26.50
Thank you for choosing UPS."
So, is there any way that we don't have to pay for this? He paid $485 for the set of wheels and tires already.

What's the problem? It's the fees associated with shipping from different countries. Unless you negotiated for the seller to pay the duties and import charges, it's ALWAYS on the buyer to pay these fees. Looks like you had no idea that these charges were required. So it's on you. Pay it. You won't be able to get out of it.
yeah he paid for SHIPPING. Do you see any shipping charges? No.
He is in CANADA. You are in the USA. There are duties/taxes/brokerage fees when you ship inbetween different countries.

Is there different between getting the wheels shipped to a work address and a resident address?

WTF?? EXACTLY where in this thread does it state anything regarding shipping costs??!?!?!?!
He paid $482 for wheels/tires that INCLUDED the shipping. That's pretty damned cheap to me?!

3 hours of sleep.
It is a standard policy that buyer is always responsible for taxes/duties/brokerage and I do feel your pain.
This always happens when items are bought from across the border. We Canadian buyers pay 15% tax in most cases plus duty and UPS brokerage fees which are the worst. I had bought items from US that were $20 value and had to pay UPS $20 for brokerage fees which I always have issue with
Once I refused to pay it and they sent it to collection agency...

This is partly why you never use UPS to ship internationally. They gouge you on "Brokerage fees" which is UPS's additional charge that you're paying them to file the customs paperwork. this is NOT Customs duties.. this is UPS's additional fees on top of Customs.
Unfortunately, you're required to pay them because you chose to ship through UPS. just another part of their delivery charges and why I never ship internationally using UPS. Fed Ex and USPS don't charge those rates, but you DO still have to pay customs duties through them upon receipt.
otherwise, everything Jeff mentioned above is 100% correct.

Fedex charges brokerage fees too which are just slightly lower than UPS... I had to pay them recently on some parts that Dave B sent me... USPS/CanadaPost shipped stuff is OK as we don't have to pay brokerage fees only tax/duty, but they have size/weight acceptance limitations...
I've received 3 different items from Canada and New Zealand and I've never once had to pay any fees. But all of these packages were under $100.
I just got the package via USPS and never had to pay a dime! I wonder what the difference is?

It sucks shipping from the US to Canada! I ordered some clothes online a month or two ago (spent $100) and this week I get a $40 bill for customs and taxes! Its ridiculous that I have to pay an extra 40%. Fortunately I live near the US border and I can ship stuff there and just drive it across myself which is what I'll always do from now on!
