Why should I get wider tires? Does it improve my handing?
#5
Yes it Does...
The Road Handling Would be so much less then getting smaller tires, try turning a 60 degree corner at 65 and tell me what happens(running on narrower tires), then try that with wider tires and its clockwork. The Point of wider tires is to have more grip onto the road, the more grip the harder you are able to turn.

back to the question at hand....
Wider wheels will give you better grip and allow for better handling. Wider tires have a larger contact patch with the road. Generally speaking, a wider tire will also have a smaller sidewall. A smaller sidewall will flex less in cornering, thus making for a more stable, planted feel.
please correct if something is wrong

I upgraded from stock 215/65/15 to 225/50/16 tires. I also upgraded from stock 15 x 6 to 16 x 7.5 wheels. The effects were significant, to wit:
1- Much better traction for braking.
2- Much better traction for cornering.
3- Stiffer, lower profile sidewalls for quicker response.
4- My new Z-rated tires can handle speed... 149+mph.
However...
5- Stiffer sidewalls + stiffer suspension= rougher ride.
6- Wide tires "follow" cracks/contours in the road more.
7- The bigger tires cost more.
8- The bigger tires almost always must be special ordered.
My final opinion: I'm very glad I upgraded to the bigger tire/wheel combo. What minor inconveniences there may be, the improvements in performance and safety more than offset.

I think the wider contact patch, keeping constant the tire's type/compound and the car's weight, definitely helps traction on dry road but may decrease traction on wet/slippery/icy road since the total unsprung weight of the car is being spread out over a larger area. Imagine making a turn on the ice on your thin blade ice skates versus a different ice skate which has a blade 10 times as thick.

Everything is rice now?
As a Mustang owner who's got a high 11sec and a high 14sec Mustang, I can't believe why you guys have fallen for that "rice labeling" crap.
I know, I know. Rice is when a car is made to look fast but it is slow. But that's all relative. A Civic LX 4door with a big exhaust, lowered, bodykit, intake and giant wing will not dare run a stock '98 Mustang GT. But that stock '98 Mustang GT would be just as scared to death of running a stock Camaro LS1. So why is it ok for that Mustang to put on white rims or a big wing or a Saleen bodykit or loud 2 chamber exhaust for that matter?
Where does it end? Most domestic V8s makes will make fun of Jap cars no matter what has been done to it, and now you guys are helping them. White rims looks great and it's the current trend. Saleen puts them on his 96-98 Mustangs that runs low 15s to high 14s in the basic package (gears, bodykit, some suspension, etc). You can get many Jap econoboxes to run those times or faster, but will still be considered "rice" if you put on similar white rims?
I think bodykits that was professionally installed on any car looks good. Big wings looks good too. I even like that light that mounts inside the wiper fluid nozzle. At night, it leaves a trace of that colored light when it passes you. Cool!
BTW, tires that are too wide will result in worse handling as the tires will crown around the rims causing less contact patch. There is a maximum width in tire that you can go, but beyond that, you are losing performance. For straight line drag racing, then wider is better though. I've got 265-50-15s on my 15x8 Draglite rims, this is too much, but they do hook better, but on uneven road and tight cornering, I can feel the wobble. I think for a 7" wide rim, the maximum tire width is about 245 or so.
I've got 235-45-17s on my other Mustang and see that it handles better, mostly because of the larger rim and lower profile, but also because the tires aren't too wide. I probably can go with 245-40s or 245-45s.
Lower profile does help also, but at the expense of risking dented rims.
