aight...what's the correct way to shift in an auto?
hold down the gas pedal while shifting from 1st to 2nd then to drive or shift to second then gas then release gas then shift to drive and then gas? which one is correct?

You don't have to release the gas when manually shifting an auto.

That actually confuses the transmission if you let off the gas before the shift. Just floor it. It has been noted that people get slighty better times manually shifting, but I haven't noticed any appreciable difference.

Turn off the O/D until you get to 80 also.

i agree, if there is a difference, i dont think i have noticed it... another thing is that someone posted a while ago, it seems they got the best 1/4 time when he just floored it on D instead of changing the gears manually... of course o/d was off. somehow i think he is right... i'll probably find out next week at the track.

For the 4th gen this is probably true. But the 5th gen makes peak hp at red line. The only way to get to red line is to shift manually in the 5th gen auto.

Actually, just keep it in 2nd gear until you hit 80...that's where 2nd peaks.

Well, I think if you don't have Don's VB, you should get better times manually shifting. I went to the track a few weeks ago. I got my best time of 15.5 at 89 mph. manually shifting. I only tried one time leaving it in Drive and got a 16.0 at 87 mph. I got the 15.5 later in the day, night actually, when it got cooler. I ran the 16.0 earlier in the day when it was very hot. After that 16.0 run, I manually shifted and got a 15.7. So, that told me it did make a difference. I think I could have got better times leaving it in Drive if I try a few more runs, but I didn't try. I'll get Don's VB soon and will head back to the track in a few months. Then, we'll see how much Don's VB will help me.

Well...

Personally I've seen better times flooring it than manual shifting. plus I heard manual shifting and auto(in racing) can be hazardous to the trans since its not really made to do that!

well...i haven't been to the track yet to test my 1/4 mile...but like yesterday night...i was at a stop light and this guy in a red truck pulled up next to me...he revved like crazy...so i was like aight...but my gear was in D well...he had stick...we both took off and at like around 40mph we were like right next to each other and then i dropped it into 2nd and then i took off...it was weird...well i guess i get more power in lower gears?

Well, you got to factor in the heat on that day. It was about 130 degrees track condition. Track condition plays a big part, ask anyone who race regularly at a track. Plus, I got that 16.0 on my second run. I suppose to manually shift it, but forgot that I left it in Drive, so I just kept on going. Funny thing was I got my best R.T. of .575 on that run. 16.0 at 87 mph. .575 R.T. 2.6 60'

I think I could have got better times just leaving it in Drive if I made a few more runs, but I didn't.
