The only way to minimize damage is to match the engine speed with car speed, essentially so there is no change in RPMs when it is in gear or when it is in neutral. It's that sweet spot between accelerating and decelerating. It'll wear stuff out if there is a load (positive or negative) on the clutch.

while we're on topic; Is it okay to change gears without pressing the clutch pedal all the way to the floor?

Well, yes and no. Its not totally OK to do that stuff, but yeah when you get used to it, go ahead. Those guys are right though, say your crusing in 3rd around 45 or so and traffic slows so you put it in neutral. Instead of using the clutch, just hit the gas a little to put a load on the engine, then right when you let off the gas, pull the shifter down and into neutral. If you got the RPM's right it should really be effortless, and its ok for the transmission. If you do it too quick it wont go out of gear with the engine getting gas, and if u do it after that then youll hear a metallic clunk from the trans, as its slowing the car down. But yeah dont do it til you get the hang of it and you should be ok

You can actually completely shift without a clutch (and I have had to do this in my Max) without really damaging or excessively wearing out your tranny, as long as you do it right.

You can clutchlessly shift into neutral from a gear without doing any damage at all as long as there is no load on the drivetrain. But whoever told you that using the clutch is bad is a moron. Smack him upside the head for me. Please.
