new plates

I bought my car a less than a week ago. I'm expecting new plates in the mail from the California DMV. Anyone have a general idea how long that takes? I hate driving around w/o any plates!

In Canada, they give you the plates right at the DMW when you go to register your car.. it doesn't really make sense that they are mailing to you.. how are you supposed to drive in the meantime?

I'd expect something important like this wouldn't take too long, so hopefully next week? then again, I'm talking out my ***.

I bought my car the first week of September, and I just got my plates in last week. The sequence will most likely start with 5W

+1, when I bought my car in VA, they issue you your new plates at the stealership. I'd estimate 2-3 weeks when it comes to being mailed to you...

It depends. I think they mail them to you if you live in the state that you bought the car.

I bought a maxima in VA and brought her to Kentucky and they gave me plates when I reg the car.

Drive SLOW in the mean time......

Thanks for all the input.
What happened to the good ol days, when instead of dealing drugs, all prison inmates did was make license plates. Thanks California for "improving" the system...

I always go to DMV and pick up my own plates. I pay extra for the Crater Lake plates, so I don't have to get them through the dealer, just the temp tag. The last time I went through a dealer and they mailed the plates it took maybe 2-3 weeks.

All three of my cars have the CL plates. www.craterlakeplates.com

I don't like the Oregon ones with the tree.

they were designed by a school kid iirc. but they were a step up from those damn school bus yellow plates back in the day. i think they're a lot nicer than say the ugly washington ones. if i keep the ve, i'll probably get the culture plates, they look nice against black.

Don't you have temporary tags there? We use paper temp tags in Florida. They are taped to the rear window. That's only with new cars though. With used cars you get a plate when you register the vehicle.

Yeah, I have a temp tag in the front window so I'm not concerned with problems from "The Man". It just want plates. I have a DMV appt on Monday for some other things like updating my address on my DL and my wife is going to get her name fixed on her DL. I guess I'll just ask then
