The tint on my rear window has gone to crap. The sides are fine, but over the last year the tint on the rear has bubbled badly. The tint is old (on the car before I bought it 2.5 years ago) and the shop told me it would be a pain to remove it because it is brittle. They are going to charge me $100 to pull the tint off "if" they can get it off in 3 hours. It will be more if it takes longer.

How hard would it be for me to remove it? I'm a fairly patient guy. What equipment should I use to remove it? Can I use a razor blade inbetween the defrost lines? I've been told to use a scrub pad to get the tint off. How does the glue come off? Sorry for the numerous question.

Check out this site
http://tintdude.com/remove.html

It has some pretty useful resources, I'm going to have to do this myself soon.

don't save that money

It is tough, you need WD40, but that sh*t is harder than the glue!, it is easy to take the tint off, but it is hard to clean up the glue. not to mention you have defroster line in the back window, oh, is it the back window(big piece) or the rear side window?

if it is rear side window, just do it yourself and save up the $$, if it is the big back window, forget it, go find a shop and ask for total cost instead of hourly rate. it is nothing to do with the patient ( you don't want to do that without getting paid) unless you don't work and you don't go to school. :P

peel off the tint slowly, apply WD40 onto the window, use tower paper( that is what I use) to SLOWLY scratch it off. SLOWLY man.

make sure you go to Chiropractor for treament after twisting your neck , bending over and kneeling on the seat after many hours.

If you have the time you could do it yourself. I've done it several times. Don't rush it.
Below are the basic instructions. Patience is the key.
Good luck!

Thanks guys. I checked out those sites and the instructions are basically the same. From what I'm reading, you spray ammonia/soapy water to the rear window and put a black trash bag over it and let it sit in the sun. By way of the heat and ammonia, the glue begins to soften and release. Heat won't be a problem seeing that I've got a black car and it's in the 90s. It sounds fairly easy as long as you're patient.

What's really odd is the tint shop was acting as if they were going to go right in and start scubbing. They didn't mention anything like the applying ammonia and heat. I'm almost owndering if I really want to have them do the tint work.

WD-40 is good, but try some paint prep spray. You can pick it up at Pep boys. It's a degreaser that works great on those adhesive goo.

Will the WD-40 or the paint also remove the glue from the defroster?
