pulse plugs?? WTF?
pulse plugs?? WTF?
I recently heard about these "pulse plugs", and how they are better for getting power out of the car. Supposedly it causes a larger explosion in the combustion chamber due to the higher wattage that the pulse comes out on. That is where my understanding ends. This seems like nothing more than a ploy to get people to spend more money to get maybe 1 horsepower more. Anyone heard of this??

higher wattage doesn't mean crap... wattage is determined by voltage ^2 / resistance; a little less resistance won't do crap
even so, copper is one great conductor so there u go
go with ngk coppers
a spark is a spark
the combustion is determined by your air/fuel + compression ratios
the only thing the spark will do is ignite your combustible mixture the time it's supposed to and that's it

Take this for what it's worth: http://www.gizmag.com/go/7594/
I'd like to see these "independent tests" myself. Better yet, I'm waiting until a major car magazine or Popular Mechanics tests it, preferrably long term. My car's working fine the way it is, and I am not about to subject it to unnecessary risks.
I'll keep an open mind on it, and monitor published testing results. The tech just barely came out last month, so I don't think we have enough yet to speculate either way, although the EPA testing is very telling.
Independent testing yielded impressive results - fuel economy improved between 2.2% and 10%, 0-60mph times improved between 5% and 10%, and torque improvements were between 3.8% and 11.2% across a range of different test vehicles when compared against brand new spark plugs of the conventional type.

Hmm.

From a Civic forum:
If you would read their methodology of their testing (which is published) you would see that your assumption is false. Although the exact testing parameters are not listed, they did change the old plugs out for new ones before the comparison. It was under their own parameters that they produced 10% MPG improvement... the EPA test (city) only improved 2.7%.
There is also a Civic that supposedly gained 9whp just from the plugs, with no tune.

Testing in the EPA’s FTP 75 test resulted in a 2.7% increase in fuel efficiency. Internal tests conducted by Enerpulse demonstrated a nearly 9% improvement in fuel efficiency. This test also showed a 7% improvement in torque and a 10.5% improvement in horsepower output over regular spark plugs.
I'm guessing here, but i bet the company took a car with spark plugs that barely worked to begin with when they ran the test. That could cause the 10% increase in hp tq and mpg. There are laws out there against making totally fulse clams about a product but then again, it is pretty easy for someone to set up their product to succeed.

The EPA did record a 10.5% improvement in power. For a 160 HP Civic, that IS 16 HP...
Just saying.
