How do you check if the MAF sensor is working and what can a non-functioning MAF do?

My car has hesitation problems, poor fuel economy, occasional rough idle.....

I was told that the MAF can be a cause for those, and I read somewhere that to check it, simply run the car around the block... then without turning the engine off remove the intake box, air filter and tube.. then while you are looking directly at it, have someone shut off the engine, at which point the wire should glow... if it doesn't, the sensor is bad. Is this an accurate way to check it?

I ran the ECU diagnosis and came up with no trouble codes...

thanks.....

A bad MAF sensor will make the idle very jumpy and on extremes the car will stall, it will also give you bad fuel economy and hesitations. The correct way to test the MAF is to use a Volt meter and do a Continuity{S?} test. What you do is get your volt meter out and tap into the wires and measure the signals. Your best bet is to get a Chilton or Haynes repair manual, there is detailed directions in there.

I purchased a used MAF sensor off of a 98 Maxima from www.car-part.com . It works great! Courtesy Nissan can probably get you a new one for about $450.
