Going West on 66 to Manassas from the 495 beltway.
Center lane, just before the exit to route 28.
Van in front of me slams the brakes and out from under him pops a full-sized mattress!!! (I'm assuming from someone in front of him)It goes up and over my car...van swerves, and I end up hitting the box spring that's lying in the lane. Cars to either side of me so I couldn't swerve.
Long story short, my new "front end" is now dented again...and there are scratches from the hood and over the roof from where the mattress slid over my car.
I haven't even had it back for a month yet!

I am simply amazed at how often this happens. Do these people just keep on driving after their bed flys off? Make sure to fill out a police report because someone might have reported something or found the owners. If the owners are found, they have to pay.

No, I don't even know what car it came off of. The driver of the van that ran over the mattress ahead of me stopped to see if I was ok...he said that it came off some pickup truck in front of him, but he was too busy trying to get out of the way to get the license plate. I travelled further up the highway to see if the pckup stopped, but there was no one to be found.

I called the Loudon Cty police...they took a statement over the phone but said it's doubtful that anyting will come of it. I took it to the same shop that did the front end work today...the guy just shook his head and laughed when he saw me drive up again. He said he'd cut me a deal: $150 to re-paint the hood and roof clear coat, and pull/touch up the dent from the fender. I'll have it back later tonight.

Dude sorry to hear about that. I always try not to drive behind people with things tied down to their car, or sticking out from the back. It freaks me out to think what could happen when things do fall off. Glad to hear you're OK.

Usually I'd agree with you and avoid following people w/ ladders and, in this case, a bed. The van in front of me was blocking the view of the pickup w/ the bed on it...the van just happened to run over the mattress before I did, it wasn't the van's fault...and I will admit I was traveling pretty close to the van; like maybe just over a carlength...enough to make it look like the mattress went shooting out from the back of the van. I'm hoping that since it was really busy, some other driver would have called in to the police, but I haven't heard anything today from them. I just got the car back earlier tonight. Looking, once again, good as new. Hopefully it will last longer than a month.

That happened to me on 495 too.

I was on 495 at midnight going to Telegraph road. This metro front of me changes lane to the left and I thought to myself "hmm, why is he changing lane?"
I just followed him and changed lane myself without much thinking and as I do that, there is a king size mattress right in front of me! I missed the mattress by literally inches.
