Ford SHO

My name is Timothy Wright, I am the web master for V8SHO. I am not here to say anything unkind or abusive about your cars.

Maybe I can say something nice about our own cars. I would refer you to http://www.v8sho.com/SHO/ultimatetaurus.html for my best ode to the V8 SHO.

I think the 96-99 SHO is a much larger car than the Maxima. I parked beside a full size Crown Vic today and think the SHO is almost as long and wide. It fits 5 NFL size adults. It has a very solid (ridged chassis)with a very capable suspension. The engine is a small displacement (3.4L) v8 with a 7000 rpm red line. A stout V8 will make 200 HP on a chassis dyno at the wheels. With simple mods I make 250 HP gross from 207 CID.

Aftermarket parts are hard to find. Only 19,730 v8 SHOs were made in 4 years. Less than 1% of Tauri are SHOs. That has good points and bad. The police don't see SHOs, the see a Taurus and ignore it for the most part. It is an very capable executive express, poised at very high speeds. That may seem like lukewarm praise but like a expensive pocket knife or tool it has outstanding fit and finish. I can drive solo for 8-12 hours and arrive refreshed.

The car is capable of 144 mph on level roads in stock condition. I drove the blue ridge at night in a light rain at twice the speed limit without excitement. (Val-1 mode - & police scanner on)

Like Jags or M5 you can always find a faster car. It is a poor mans Jag or M5, maybe not the fastest but a very poised car to drive on any road at 2-3 times the speed limit.

Sure I run 17” rims and have other mods, some have run 200 HP NOS kits. Still I value the stealth above all else and hope to make very good time while always being courteous.

Of the 19,000 SHO owners less than 500 are active in the V8SHO club. Most owners are 55+ professionals who don’t race.

Thanks for your time.

I hope something we say on V8SHO maybe useful to you. We have urls on tires and something nice on oil filters. http://www.shoclub.com/lubrication-o...-oilpart1.htm.

As car guys we have more in common than not. When Maxima guys get old and need a domestic for job reasons, maybe they got SHOs?

Thanks for the time,

Timothy Wright

to answer the original question, I have a 98 I30t and I smoked a 96 SHO. Well I didnt smoke him but I beat him pretty easily. twice. I have no mods and neither did the other guy. I have an auto. enough said.

On another note, I did lose to an SVT Taurus the other day. His car was loud. abnormaly loud. I wonder what mods he had...

Not to start a war or anything, I like a lot of the products that Ford puts out, but the quality is just not there. My buddy takes great care of his 97 Mustang GT, and the thing is still falling apart, cracked leather, broken *****, the whole 9 yards. I might buy an Explorer someday, but only if the build quality improves SOrry, just my $.02...

No, the sprockets walk off of the cam. Shame on Yamaha for such a **** poor assembly job. See www.V8SHO.com for more info..
What's even better is that the 96-99 motor is an interfence motor. Cam spins freely and smashes all the valves into the pistons.

You are going to love that Y-pipe!!! You getting it from SHO SHOP?? I used to have a '90 SHO most bolt-ons and that Y-pipe really makes your top end pull like crazy!!! The only car I lost to was a crazy 9-3 Turbo Saab, I am at 5200 ft so the altitude favors turbo cars.

Pic of my SHO on the home page, sorry I had on my snow tires in the pic.

Not sure who SHO off is, but I just got my second SHOshop Y pipe (3rd Y pipe ever). I have the first gen Y pipe that you prob had on my 5 speed. Had the nicer P-plus on my automatic which I sold. This pipe is SHOshop's 2nd generation y pipe with equal length. I got mine Jet coated so it won't rust. First impressions are that the welds suck as much as the first gen pipe. Cool how I post my 1st impressions on SHO stuff on a Max list..lol

This pipe requires mucho assembly. I am still taking pieces of it out of the box.

It is true we are having problems with camsprocket failure. We can document 21 cars with this failure out of 19,730. Still Ford has not stepped up to the plate on this. (so far they are pooching us) Repair bill can be $6,000. That is why we are so very concerned.

I guess like any other marque you can get what you pay for. Stangs are inexpensive cars, Most SHO owners have cars with interiors that look like new after 5 years. Quality has been outstanding.

Still this is my 1st domestic in 20 years and if FOMOCO does not step up with the cam sprocket issue it will be my last for another 20+ years.

If I may venture a question? I was told Maxima owners can buy a blower kit from the dealership. Is that true?

Not that I know of. I believe you are talking about Toyota (TRD). There is a SC kit available for the Maxima though.

Factory Maxima Blower

Bumber, nothing like some artifical inhalation for artifical inspiration.

Thanks for the info, V8SHOs are still waiting for their first blower kit. OTOH Blown V6 has the ECTA record for E/BGC of 160.142 mph fot the flying mile.

5.0s are anywhere between $3000-$9000 depending on mileage and conv/hatch. You'll find a lot of race-ready 11-second 5.0s out there, at least in the Phila area you can.

I raced a newer body style V8 SHO this weekend on I-80 near the Illinois border. I saw him getting on the highway flooring it, so I got behind him real quickly and stayed there for a while. When the road opened up, he hits it and and moves to the right lane. By the time I hit 120 I was 2+ cars ahead of him, plus I started a car behind him. The look on the guys face was priceless I must say!

Those SHO Yamaha Engines are badass, and they'll take I30's anyday of the week including Sunday. BTW, I own both an I30 and Maxima, and I barely beat a Taurus LX (200 HP).

Nice..I'll be the first to admit that a new Max should be able to smoke a V8 SHO. I'd like to do a comparo with a new Max vs. a V6 SHO.

Racing Club

My best friend drives a 1996 Taurus LX, and him and I are starting a racing club. I love the Taurus as much as I love the Maxima, and he feels the same way. For some reason, the Taurus and Maxima seem "related". I don't know what I'm saying, but if you just look at a dropped Taurus, oh man. BTW, the new ones are ugly.

I30's whuppin SHO's, 'eh?

Looks like I'm gonna have to line up with my mom at the light one day.

Can't let her beat me, Noooooo way.

I raced my buddy in his 99 Max the other night again.

He still lost. hehe

Now he's on a mission to mod the hell out of that thing, which, sadly for me, he'll be able to do thanks to the aftermarket for Maximas vs the aftermarket for V8 SHO's.

Still, I wouldn't be upset if I lost to one. I still think the SHO is a better value ( especially now. )

I paid a hair over 11 grand for my car last November, my buddy paid over 20 for his around the same time.

His is cloth, single CD, no roof, I've got leather, roof, cd changer.

Thankfully the SHO is just another Taurus to most people, that means you can go out and steal 'em.

Thanks. I'll check them out. I'm trying to decide if I want to trade in my Maxima for a 2002 255 HP 6 speed or get a 2nd play car, like a Mustang. The aftermarket for Mustangs is incredible and parts are cheap. I like the older 5.0's. They seem to be faster, more easily modded, and less expensive.

I'm torn between the idea of maintaining 2 cars, versus having one more expensive car. (3 if you count my wife's car)

i jsut went throught that too. keep my max and get a 300zx or a supra TT for like 12-15K and make it MAD FAST or sell and get a 2k2. well i'm getting a 2k2. too much hassle.
