Which would you rather get???

I'm looking into buying a car this month. I am looking at a 97-98 MAx SE and the Sentra SE-R VSpec. I would greatly appreciate your opinions.

I'd go with the Max. There are a very limited amount of SE-R's being produced and dealers probably wont want to negotiate much. Also, the SER will be pretty quick and have some nice features but to me its still a Sentra. If your patient, you can probably dig out a fully loaded 98 SE for around $12K.

You sound surprised that you posted this on a Maxima BBS and are getting responses for the Maxima.

I say go for the sentra spec-v. Your getting a brand new car with warranty vs a 5 year old one. It is going to be a lil pocket rocket and looks pretty cool if you throw some springs on it. The spec-v is most definitely a "drivers" car.

i say go for the sentra. i admit the maxima is a really good car even though it's underrated, but hey, it's cool to try something new. a new car sounds pretty good to me.

Get the car that you like. The Sentra SE-R is a really good looking car, and with the 300watts Rockford Audio, Recaro Seats, it's quite nice.

Sentra.....

like someone said limited numbers, but 180hp and such a light car should be pretty nice, plus I think it looks better than the 4th gens too (no offense of course ) and with springs and a kit...man that thing will be lookin purdy!!! if it were my choice, I say SE-r all the way!

Drive them both...see what you like, you might have trouble finding a 97-98 5spd, good luck. I would choose the MAX, even though I think the sentra looks hot.

At this point I'm leaning towards the Max cause it has a V6 and is a little more roomier. The SE-R VSpec has a nice interior though and is a 6 speed. I think my dealership will want a lot of money for the VSpec though. They are asking something like 18grand for a 98 max with 35k miles auto

...

Let's see:

Why the Max:
Roomier, cheaper, more luxurious..

Sentra:
Faster, brand new car, better handling, better optioned.

Bottom line: You can find a 97-98 5spd for under 14 grand for SURE. The SE-R, especially V spec will cost around 20 grand. However, you will be getting a NEW car. It's up to you, if you are looking for a good handling, more potential, fun pocket rocket car to keep for a while.. go for the Sentra by all means. The Max is a better "cruising" car, roomier, can hold more people, more comfortable... You will also save a good 6 grand on the Max.

I'd go with the Sentra SER-V spec. You know the aftermarket is going to eat this car up. I've been thinking about trading myself. It's gonna be hard going from a Max to a Sentra but 1. I wanna save money by dropping my monthly payments. 2. I want a car that can be modified and be unique at the same time. The Max only has cartain mods that everyone winds up getting. 3. That car is hott.

I may wind up not caring about saving $$$ and opt to trade in for the G35. Decisions, decisions....

Is that sentra REALLY gonna be faster bone stock vs. bone stock than a maxima ?? They look tight and are gonna be pocket rockets, but don't the max's have a lil' more grunt ?

Even with the 6 spd VSpec, the reported numbers are 6.9 seconds 0-60, so a 5 spd 4th gen is at least as fast if not slightly faster.

It all comes down to whether or not one cares about driving a compact 4 door, even though Nissan does a great job to make it as attractive as possible.
