Leather cracking already??? WTF

My car has about 9800 miles on it and the driver's seat is already cracking on the butt part of the seat. It came like that when I got the car from a private party (at about 5600 miles). I used leather cleaner and other stuff to treat it, but it is still like that. It wasn't a cut it in the leather because the guy said there was no damage to it, it just started cracking. Is this under warranty?

My car is 8 months old, and 11k, the driver seat holding my 190lb ***, hasn't even shown a sign of wear. But I used conditioner at least every 2 months on it to keep it nice, soft and conditioned.

BMW Leather sucks now. I have seen it, and already see alot of new cars tearing.

I am not going to argue with you.. nissan leather sucks and its uncomfortable..

when the 95 Maxima first came out one if the biggest problems was that in the car with leather.. after driving for 2 hours it was very uncomfortable.. ask Medic to show you pics of his cracking leather..

like i said before.. Nissan leather sucks

go sit in a TL or a CL and you will know what nice leather is like

Okay, well on 2000+ Maximas the Leather is at least 100% better than the 4th gen leather. I agree. I have seena lot of 4th gens leather have issues, but the 5th gen leather is much better made.

Sorry but Acura leather is worse. Go to there site, they have so many complaints on tears. I even know a friends dads TL was less than 6 months old and he had to have the back seat replaced already because it was tearing, and they don't have kids.

I believe the topic was not regarding comfort. But quality of the leather. As long as you take care of your leather the proper way, it will last. People who do not take care of it, and do not have good tint or put a sunshade up to keep the sun off the seats, it will crack. All leather will crack.

The Acura seats are defintely more comfortable, but the leather is not as nice. They use ALOT of vinyl, basically 75% of the seats are vinyl, and the rest is leather. The part that is leather is where your butt sits in the middle, and the middle back, the sides, etc are all vinyl. I got this off there forum here:

Depends, if its a wear crack, and you have low miles, they might replace it because it shouldn't wear that fast. But it is really hard to say....they will ask you if you use conditioner, you better say yes, if you don't they won't warranty it.

Make sure you use conditioner at least every 2 months on your car seats and they will be soft, comfortable, and not tear or crack.

I learned alot of this stuff from friends that are professional detailers...people wonder why my car always looks new.

I always heard that Japanese leather in general is crappy and very thin. So I went for the GXE and got aftermarket leather in the brownish orange color I wanted and the hardness of the seat I wanted.

Damn, what a deal the Maxima is...better in every when compared to a BMW. You get what you pay for, always.

It is one of the best and softest you've sat on compared to what? A Camaro?

So in your case, the Maxima has great leather (because you care for it) and that this BMW's (what model, what yr?) leather sucks. How much care was put into the care of the BMW's leather?

To answer the first post, you must use leather conditioner before cleaning it with leather cleaner. Before you use leather cleaner, you must clean the surface with a damp cloth and dry it. The surface must be free of dirt before being cleaned with leather cleaner.

Second, you cannot use leather cleaner too often and not use the conditioner.

I need to get my oil changed, so I will go to the dealer and have them check out the seat, plus the trunk lid TSB, and some rattles in the dash on the passenger side.

Try Zanio

Zanio, who makes the best car "wax" in the world, also makes a great leather conditioner. I have been using it on my 2000 I30 since new and apply it 4x a year. It protects and keeps it soft.

Okay, just like ours is holding fine as well. So that does not make ours any worse than theirs.

I guess that makes him a leather specialist.

It so happens that you've given one example of crappy BMW leather to the initial post of a Maxima with crappy leather.
How about other cars, other than BMW? I guess Rolls-Royce must have the worst leather.

I'm sure that the type of climate you guys live in also is a factor. Dry climates parch leather faster, whereas humid climates have leather retain more moisture over a longer period. I don't know if this is true, but just a thought.

Russ how do you know that BMW leather sucks. Have you ever owned a BMW product? I have owned 2 and can say that the leather doesnt suck and is top notch. You need to get it into your head that the Maxima isnt gods gift to the automotive world. There are a lot of other cars out there that are much better than our Maximas. BTW, Maxima leather is average at best. Go look at a Mercedes or Jaguar and you will get a taste of quality leather

No you need to get it into your head that I stated my opinion. And I never said the Maxima was gods gift, so shut the hell up. I would still own a BMW over the Maxima if I can afford it, but I can't for the model I want. Like I said, I do not own one, but I know a few that due, and have seen many with issues on the seats and leather. Don't give me the crap about the leather is better just because you have owned a few. Read the bmw boards, they are complaining about the leather too, we rarely do, so that must be a reason for that.

Well guys, after returning from the dealer, they won't do anything about it because it isn't the leather cracking. It must have been a cut from the previous owner's pants or something. I tried though. They also fixed the rattling in the dash and they are going to fix the truck lid/bumper TSB. They have to order the parts for it first.
