Mentor Program for Newbies

Hey. Just curious on how us "veterans" can help out the new guys in our respective local areas.

i thought maybe we could have like regional Mentoring Day. Sounds kinda looney, but i think maybe it would help and bring the communities closer together... yah i know like 90% of all questions concerning our cars are already on the net, and the newbies just have to find and read them, but sometimes, a human is better than html.

whut do u guys think.?

Good idea.

We could also help others with installing things or mods (like rewires, clearing tails, etc)

In a previous flame war with Russ, I was informed that "veterans" are those who have been around for 5 years or more. Since I'm only been around 3 years and some change, I don't qualify.

no you don't want to do this.. i have been burned on this 3 times.. people don't really care about you.. they care about their car.. and if something happends.. be prepared to take a shot for it.. thats why now.. i only install stuff for my family.. and my buddy DanNY only does it for a nominal fee..

that helping out people is crap.. people don't appreciate stuff.. and they only care about themselves

5+ years = veteranship? does that mean we are still rookies?

Russ clearly implied that to me during the "Axxis Deluxe Plus brakes are good and who are you to tell me that they suck when I know they are better than Metalmaster and I don't care if you have run both pads the Deluxe Plus are better in your experience because you obviously didn't break them in right even though a few days later I posted how bad the Deluxe Plus brakes are because I fried them in a high speed maneuver" fiasco.....

But you should probably ask him.

I have to agree on this one. NO more free labor for me. If people want stuff done, they have to pay $$$$. Helping people and being nice get you no where. It's so easy for people to ask, but when it's time for them to give. NOTHING!!!!!

So what? No free install with direct port nitrous?
How about fi dolla?

I never said free, I said help. I'm guessing you could charge someone $50+ to clear their tails with their tail lights?
It's cheaper then paying $170.
Or even charge for something as simple as light rewires.

I mean installers make tons of money to do things, so why can't we make a little?

Yeah, I have so much more to learn to be a veteran like Russ.

I believe you were a newbie when I first got involved.....a few months IIRC....

Wow, how time has flown by.....

Yeah probably. I had lurked for several months (almost a year) before I ever posted. I don't know anything about Maximas either. I'm still too new. I have 1 and a half more years to go before I lose my newbie status.

It's a shame that things would come to that, but it's a perfectly natural reaction if you got screwed a few times. Sorry to hear it.
I remember thinking how cool it was of Chesto to be sitting there on the ground at Maxus installing Jose's gages for him when he easily could've just spent his whole day socializing. A sad day it would be if people like him would lose that natural willingness to help their neighbor because some idiot came back to bite them in the **** instead of saying, "Thank You."

wrong.. when i do a pair of tail lights for $170 . ... you are getting BRAND NEW tail lights.. so thats 10 times cheaper than paying someone $50 to do them.. you think if you buy them from the dealership.. they are list price $100 each.. you guys do the math..

I'm still a rookie if we're going by the 5 year vet rule. I've been here since Dec. 99 (on Peel's board)... so that's about 1 year and 10 months.

I just participate a lot.
