Engaged Cruise control while in neutral

hi all,

I just wanted to share this because it came to me as a surprise. Yesterday night i was on the highway and while shifting gears, i forgot that i put the car in neutral as i was on down hill.
The car speed was 65mph and i accidently pressed the SET key of cruise control. Next moment my car screamed and the rpm needle was moving quickly clockwise and my RPM meter was about to enter the red range when suddenly i disengaged the cruise control.
This was a big purprise to me. I was wondering

1)Is this the way its supposed to do when you engage cruise in neutral gear?

2)Don't you think there should have been some prevention against this in the ASCD (Automatic Speed Control Device)?

3)What harm you can do to your engine on high rpm in neutral?

Feedback appreciated. Thank you all.

In response to #3, I wouldn't think that it could be any worse than revving your engine?

Just a guess, but the cruise would probably backoff when it hit the redline.. one hopes..

It will just bounce off the rev limeter.

I noticed this too, on several occasions I would have the car in cruise control and then I put the car in nuetral{Not using the clutch} and the RPM's would shoot up. The only time this will happen is when you use just the hand shifter to go into nuetral, if you hit the clutch pedal or brake pedal the cruise will shut off.

The cruise unit will sense the sudden increas in engine speed and will disengage way before you reach red line.
