Well, its a CVT so technically, they could make as many speeds as they wish

How does a CVT work? Is it consistent?

hmmmm...how much $$$?

I think I read on the FreshAlloy forums that they'd be selling for 100,000 British Pounds...translates to $100,000+ in US.

Agghhhh I'm blind.

I thought the new WRX looked bad with those Neon style headlights, but this is even worse. Guess it only matter what the back looks like though, cause that's all anyone is going to see

CVT = continously variable transmission...
As far as pricing I rememeber there was an article in C&D that said the GT-R is going to be around 50K, so I guess is going to compete with the Corvette, M3, S4...

Go to www.howstuffworks.com..they should have a more info...
Its basically the concept that between two gears there are infinite gears (like between 2 numbers there are infinite numbers), so the engine can choose from infinite gears and deliver optimum power

CVT stands for continously variable transmission. Instead of gears, they have a pulley system that can infinitely change the gearing to whatever setting for maximum amount of torque. I think they have preset gears for CVT but i'm not exactly sure why if infinite variations in gears are possible

Audi has developed a CVT system for the new A4. They claim that the CVT transmission is more effecient and faster than a manual transmission!!! With the A4 this is the first application of a CVT transmission to a motor that develops over 200hp and 200 ftlbs of torque. Before the A4 CVT transmissions were only used in small displacment compact cars with less than 100hp. I believe at one point honda and subaru have offered CVT transmissions.

I'm not at all impressed...
After all, I've had a vehicle with ten gears since I was 7 years old...

Huffy, baby!

I like the GTR concept. The rear looks more like a Ferrari than a Corvette.

Here's some information about the CVT.
-It doesn't use steel belts like other CVTs.
-It's a half-toroidal CVT, using spinning discs that transfer the rotation from the input to the output side. The angle of the discs is changed for other gear ratios. If the discs go straight across, that's 1:1. There should be info on the web, search for JATCO.

Here's a link that explains how it works:
Half-Toroidal CVT

This picture shows how the ratio changes:
Ratio Change
-There's a highly viscous transmission fluid that stays between the discs and the half-toroid to prevent metal on metal contact.
-It's offered in Japan on the Skyline as something like a $5000 option, and Nissan still loses $5000 on it, just to get it into the market.
-I have a coworker that test-drove the Nissan Gloria with this CVT, he said it felt very smooth and powerful.
-The 7 discrete speeds exist just for driver familiarity. The CVT can be run in infinitely-variable mode to optimize the powerband.
