Yeah. A car can become a total loss due to hail damage.

The pic is similar to damage from a hailstorm that happened where i live in 1991, there were hail stones the size of bricks! yeah bricks! coming down that day. I barely made it to a local car wash in the car i was driving att just before it hit, didn't get the first dent. The damage was unbelievable, It(the storm) hit the local ford dealership dead on, after they were selling brand new high end lincoln town cars for like 15k! almost their entire stock of used trade ins were totaled out.

Not to mention gaping holes in roofs of many houses, one of the local 2 story banks that had a complete glass front lost every single pane. The complete damage total was over 10 million dollars. So yeah, hail can definitely cause a car to be totaled.

/\ Wowzers. That's nuts. I've heard people use the expression that the hail was the size of a golf ball, but never a brick!! Craziness!!

Softball sized hail in Fort Worth Texas in 1995 totaled out several car dealer's inventories.

I'd have the car checked by a body shop though, make sure it wasn't also involved in a car accident even if the CarFax report comes back clean.
