Dealership damaged my car!!! Argh!!!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Need some response from those that drive a 5.5Gen or 2002 to 2004 I35. I currently have a 2002 I35 approaching 200Kms and was wondering if I should be aware of any long term problems that will develop. So far, I love this car and it has been rock solid. Just did brakes on it since I owned it. Got the usually 02 Sensor issue but not over concerned about it right now. Tune up will be happening shortly. Bit of rust appearing now but nothing touch up paint can't fix.

Looking to get an 06 to 08 FX35 as a hauler but was wondering if I should part with the car. I guess my question again is for those that have more than 200000 KMs (125000 miles) on their car, what longevity problems have surfaced on you?

Thanks guys.

PS: Anyone have a spare silver I35 spoiler sitting around. Damn clear coat on mine is peeling off.

I have 190kms. I would keep it if it's still doing well.

I have yet to have any problems with this car. Aside from brakes, tires and 1 battery change, it's been perfect.

Ive only got 104K miles on my 2002 I35 but so far like you said its been rock solid. As with you the only things that have come up were general brake maintenance and an o2 sensor.

If i were you i would keep it, drive it when you don't want to put mileage on the FX .

Men, if you don't mind having it in your driveway, taking space and you still paying liability or full coverage insurance on the car, then keep it. I for one, I believe in having one reliable car to drive it until I get tired of it and get a new one. I don't believe in owning 2 cars, except one is for special occasion and the other your daily driver. I get 1 good one as my everyday driver and special occasion car.

Its over 200k, sell it. It will only start having too much problems as it gets to 220 0r 230 0r even 250. At that time, maybe no one will be interested in buying "your troubles".

If it was me, I would sell it.

This is my first time owning a Maxima and I bought mine brand new. I have always owned Toyota Camrys. 3 so far. Bought each one used. Sold and bought another Camry. Never owned 2 at same time. I sold each car as soon as they hit 200k. I did not get the chance to sell the second because it got flooded at 130k and the insurance paid me for it. I went and got me my last Camry. Then at 185k, had the need for speed and performance, sold it for my MAXIMA!

Good point PetitFrere. I see your logic where you do not want to keep a car until it is worthless and it becomes a money pit. If I were to sell it privately, I would probably be lucky to get $8K for it. Conversely, the I35 would still be my daily driver particularly when going on short trips in Alberta and BC.

I should have changed the thread name to who has the highest mileage on their VQ and what luck have you had with it so far.

Thanks for the input folks. Keep them coming...

Haha congratulations on your approach to 200k! Its a accomplishment when we can make it to 200k miles without any major problems. But I think you should keep it but be on the lookout for the next great deal on a car. Because once it reaches 300k miles, its going to be a hit or miss situation.

You are in Alberta? Where exactly? Calgary or Edmonton? I want to visit Canada, men. I was contemplating...., Calgary, Edmonton or way over in Ontario, Toronto. Which is the nicest place to visit? And weather wise too. For I have heard of some freezing roads in Canada and I have never driven on snow, so, don't want to embarras me and my Max.

If you got the garage space for it, I would DEFINITELY keep it. You wont get anything for that car. It would be a perfect beater and you maintained it so you know its problems. I know a handful of people with extra high mileaged maxima's. I even had around 160k on my second one before letting it go. These are different times. I would TRY to trade it in and see what they give you. Anything less than 2,000 and I would definitely keep it.

200km's is not THAT much...we had a toyota celica which we drove to 250km's and it was fine exept electrical issues.

Keep it mind u would be lucky to get 6k in Alberta...not many ppl interested in these cars and many dont even know they exist lol

I would say keep it if u maintained it well...but i have no personal experience with any Nissan over 100km

Edit: u should ask lightonthehill

Live in Calgary. More white collar that Edmonton. I used to live in Edmonton a number of years but I prefer Calgary. Toronto. Only been their once but everyone mentions their strip clubs are second to none.

Banff, Nanaimo, Vancouver are a few places that come to mind should you drive all the way up here. So long as you have good winter tires should you come up during winter, you should be more than fine.

So far, the suggestions are unanimous to keep the car. I would be lucky to get $7k if I sold privately considering the mileage on have on it now, perhaps even far less. Just took my spoiler off to get it repainted. Stoopid after market one had a crappy clear coat and it just pealed off this past winter. At least the body shop cost is quite cheap.

Probably going to give it a tune up myself (1st time since I have owned my car) when the next long weekend rolls around. There is a write up somewhere that I have seen around here and it should save me a visit from the stealership. I think one thing I am going to get done is a compression test afterwards. What numbers do you think should get?

One thing I forgot to mention is that my VQ does burn a half litre of synthetic oil. Not seeing any leaks though.

For those that have changed their spark plugs, have you installed NGK platinum over bosch? Is getting Iridiums worth it?

Thanks again peeps

currently just shy of 305,000...plus about 2500 miles i can't document because i had switched gauge clusters for a month or so, then returned to the original cluster.

NGK all day, stay far away from Bosch plugs. They have been noted to cause issues. Maybe the newer ones work better but NGK has always been the most recommended choice and I used them on stock, boost and lightly modded VQ's.

Copper if you are looking for best performance, and platinum if you want to keep the intervals to a minimum.

There's a manual '89 SE (vg30e) at the junkyard that I gleaned some parts off of recently. Has 390,000 miles and looks like it was in great condition and that somebody just took the Air Check Texas replacement/incentive program on it. Interior on it was in near-mint shape, original radio, etc. I went back today to get some more interior parts and a bunch of idiots ripped it to heck A real shame

You definitely want to keep it. As long as you have some extra money set aside (would keep about $800), that will cover any issues that arise like struts, brakes & rotors, etc... Not saying you are going to need it but when things do pop up its nice to be able to not worry about paying for those kind of repairs that will need to be done as those parts wear. As long as it still has the power, the electrical system is still functioning properly, and the transmission is acting normal, you really have nothing to worry about.

Good Stuff. It is always so nice not having to make payments on your ride and it still pulls strong. Kind of reminds of my first get Acura 3.0CL. I think I need to get my brakes rechecked again as I am getting a stoopid squeel happening and I already had a full job done at 130K. Dumb stealership may have done a poor job on this.

Got my spoiler redone and I am going to replace my windshield due to huge crack. Not in my line of sight but it is starting to bug me. A little touch up paint here and there and the car still looks pristine. This has been one of the best cars I have purchased in my lifetime. Definitely a keeper.

PS: Slightly off topic but what do you guys think of the G37 convertible. My friend is planning on getting one but the styling just misses the mark for me. Its quite heavy as well but uber performance is not his concern right now.

No brainer. Keeping the car. I just moved into a new condo and will still be looking at a used FX35. Now, another interesting question. For as long as all of you owned you maxima, have you hung on to your girlfriend for just as long. j/k

Keep'm coming.

I personally would keep it, the VQ is a fairly strong motor. The fact that you've gotten this far is a testament to its reliability. Besides, you aren't likely to get a whole lot for a car with that many miles. Run it until it's no longer feasible to do so. I thought it qualified for the C.A.R.S. program (4500 credit), then I read it's for vehicles with 18mpg or less. hrmm

Too bad Canada did not have a CARS program as the US does. I bought a wiper arm assembly this weekend as my driver side appeared to be getting rust. Picked up one from an 02 Max at the dealership assuming it to be the same for my I35 but lo and behold, the wiper arm is a little longer and it does not have small grooves gripping the mount on the actual wiper motor. Meh.

I'm just over 110K and my Maxima is falling apart. I thought I'd drive this thing closer to 200 but with a shot transmission and host of other problems, I will be letting this thing go asap

my step dad is nissan tech and claims the maxima's/ I30/I35 to be the best cars built (before 04) he said there are countless times where he sees 4th and 5th gen maxima's with over 200k on the odo that just come in for mantainence. There is even one 99 SEL max that is about break 500,000 miles.

my oponion. Keep it becuase it will last as long as you take care of her
