-3rd gen bose fronts
-4th gen bose 6x9 rears
-4th gen bose fronts (door spkrs, not A pillar tweeters)
-5th gen bose rears (also, where are these speakers located? i believe there is a sub on the rear deck but where are the regular rear spkrs?)
-5th gen bose fronts (door spkrs, not A pillar tweeters)
and also if ANY of you have ANY Bose speakers, Bose cd head units etc from any year max that you want to sell plz let me know...i might be putting in a bose cd head unit in my '92 & i want to see if i can put in bose speakers from '95+

Heres my experience so far. On the 4 gen, the 97-99's have the tweeters in the doors where the 95-96s have them in the A pillars. All 4 speakers are 6.5" oversized. There is NO tweeter in the rear deck speaker (no wonder it sounds muddy).
As for the headunit, 95-99 are interchangable wire wise, however cosmetically they are different. I've had problems with the stock 97 headunit skippin on bumps. According to Clarion (who makes it) there was a design change in the CD mechanism, perhaps for worse.
I do know quite a bit about the bose system in the 4 gen so if you have any other questions just ask.

I'm in the process of giving myself a little Xmas present. Upgrading the head unit in my BOSE system. Sometime later in December, I'll have the Clarion BOSE Head unit available. E-mail me if interested.
By the way, let me add to Eric's comment's. He's exactly right about the 4th gens. Also, the no tweeters in the back thing, that was done on purpose. If the tweeters were there, the high frequencies would clash from all 4 tweeters being so close to each other, hurting imaging. It's the same in the Bose Mercedes, Bose Acura, etc. the head unit is a double DIN, I don't know if the 3rd gen is as well.

ok cool do any of you 2 guys (eric and dwapenyi) think i can put a 4th gen bose system in my 3rd gen? or do you think it would be better to go to an aftermakret system (i had Pioneer in mind - head and speakers)

Since you're starting from scratch, it would be easier to go straight to aftermarket. Was your 3rd gen originally wired for BOSE??
If not, it will be quite a challenge to put BOSE in. For starters, all the speakers have more than the usual plus and minus wires going to them.

I agree, it is not worth the pain to try to run a bose system in your car, especially being that nothing is going to match up. Last I checked on ebay Bose parts were very pricey. Did you know that the amplifiers are on the speakers themselves, and the headunit merely provides a balanced line level signal output? Not only that, even if you use just the headunit (I did before, my Audiocontrol EQX units can take balanced line signals so I had the Bose as my main headunit before) the Bose headunit does not provide a flat output. The bass is jacked and the treble seems diminished. I never hooked my real time analyzer to the output, but its quite obvious it is not flat.
Also, if you dont have the wiring harnesses that fit, you're gonna be damned finding them.
Also the rear speakers sound aweful on the Bose. I run 4 tweeters with the tweeters in the rear significantly lower then the fronts, so I dont hurt imaging up front, but the back seats can still hear the tweeters because they are so close.
I seriously would NOT try to Bose your system.

but then the only pain in the @$$ is since ill be putting in new aftermarket everything (speakers, deck and all) when i sell the car ill probably be throwing back in the old bose system..erg oh well
Remeber this...
I recently replace my audio deck in my 91 GXE (it's not BOSE, but the setup is similiar) and I encountered a problem when I was installing the head unit. Not with the harness, but with the antenna. (If you don't already know this) the 3rd gen has 2 antennas in it - the power up one and one in the windsheild. Just go to Best Buy and ask them for a Dual Diversity Antenna Adapter. They'll know what you're talkin about. It runs about $6 or so (It was a while back, so I can't rember the exact price).
Oh, and you should find it pretty challenging getting the metal brackets off the old CD player (you'll see what I'm talking about). Hahaha. I broke the tip of a phillips head screw driver tryin to loosen the screws. Just save yourself the pain and attack it with a power drill. Some people have just givin up and drilled the screws.

2K2 Bose Hookup
Seems like some of you really know a lot about the bose setups. I want to keep my 2K2 Bose head but hook up an aftermarket amp and replace the four front drivers. I did some research and I found this product called the LOCB from Soundgate found here: http://www.soundgate.com/adj-loc.html . It is supposed to convert the "differential ground" pre-amp outputs from the head unit into standard +/- outputs. Does anyone know if this will work? Is there a better product I should look into? Thanks in advance.
Re: 2K2 Bose Hookup
That sound gate site looks very interesting. I wish I'd known about it before. Anyhow, I'm kindof doing the vice versa of you. I'm replacing my Bose head unit with a Clarion 815MP. I will be using the PD4 from here;
www.linkmeup.com
From my brief look at soundgate, it looks like the PD4 may offer a bit more such as;
Fade from front to rear, I think you may lose that with soundgate stuff, unless you have to buy 2 of them, no?
Steering wheel audio controls, you'll lose that with both of them. I don't have steering wheel controls, so its not an issue with me.
Check with your soundgate rep before you make the plunge.

. . . .throwing back in the old BOSE system?? Doesn't that mean that you already have the wiring and harness for BOSe in your car?? If so, that would make putting the bose back a whole lot easier.

Re: Re: Re: 2K2 Bose Hookup
You know, I never did realize the size of it. I've e-mailed audiolink to get physical dimensions. If it is really big, I'll put it under the drivers' seat.

Got a reply. The PD-4 is 5.25" by 5.25" by 1." Not that big really. I'll probably be able to stuff it behind my headunit and ACC in the dash. There's lots of room behind there.
