Pic of EGR valve?
Are you sure thats what it looks like? GotRice sent me a pic of an EGR from a VG30DETT and I tried to find something like that under my hood but couldn't. Then another user e-mailed me a pic of what he thought was the EGR. The device on top of the left sparkplug on the back bank on the driver's side of the car. I believe he is correct by following the hoses that come out of it. Go check your car if you have a 4th gen and up. I think the 4th gen and up have newer type EGRs.

EGR
I don't know what year max you have, but according to my Haynes manual, the EGR on 1999 models is different:
"On 1999 models, the EGR system consists of a stepper motor-type EGR valve, and EGR temperature sensor and the PCM. The PCM controls the EGR flow rate by reversing the direction of the stepper motor, opening or closing the EGR passage in small increments. This system allows for precise control of EGR flow, achieving optimum EGR flow depending on engine operating conditions."

Re: EGR
I have a 97 max. It looks like it has one of those complicated EGRs like you described. Maybe not as complicated as the 99 ones. But not the typical flying saucer type.
