constant battle with my roof spoiler came to a tragic end :/

So... My first impressions of the ionic dynamics half roof spoiler was disappointing. I first noticed that it doesn't contour to the curve of the back windshield and there is minimal contact between the spoiler and glass. But anyway, when I first got it I followed what I read online. And 3m taped it to the rear window. That didn't work out well considering that the tape did not adhere to the spoiler its self. So I took a different approach and crazy glued the tape to the spoiler then mounted it to the glass worked out fine... For 2 months. Went to the beach, car sat in the sun. I go to my car only to see the spoiler laying on my trunk with white gooey tape hanging from above. My next approach was epoxy.. Bad choice. The spoiler was mounted absolutely perfect and would not budge. I come out of work the same night only to see the rear window shattered to a million pieces but held together by the window tint. And the spoiler dangling by a small section of epoxy. I'm in class right now but will def post pictures later because I know how much you guys love pictures. And advice on how I should mount this damn thing?

Surface prep is key, the 3M tape should have held it in place.

As far as surface prep went with the 3m tape. I windexed the window, cleaned it with a blade and made sure everything was dry before taping it down.

And I'd say that the epoxy was the cause and I'm guessing when the epoxy cured it torqued the glass or something.

Regardless, the cars in the shop getting a new window and I asked them to mount the wing properly.

I cant see any way that a little spoiler has enough pull to break the window no matter what is holding it on

I dont know for sure, im not to familirar with epoxy but it said it bonds to glass. I dont know what happened here.

But thats what it looked like

I got it replaced and got the spoiler mounted right. The shop used 33m and sealer.

Whats crazy though is that there is a 5% tint on that window but you cant see it for some reason.

it just doesnt make any sense that epoxy or a little spoiler could break the window... was it super hot out or something?

the thing is if its all cracked up it would be pretty hard to spot a point of impact. Not to mention that if somebody say stepped/fell or even punched it and the tint is holding it together you may not have a noticable spot where the hit occurred

No, it was pretty cool out.
Maybe someone attempted to steal it by yanking it off? because most of the spoiler was ripped off. And maybe he had to ditch because someone was coming?

Probably a difference in expansion rates. Really doesnt matter hot or cold, it gonna expand or retract and if its at a different rate somethings gotta go.

My CF roof spoiler held on for years, when I decided to remove it I actually had to pull very hard to remove it.
You MUST prep both surfaces, the glass and back of the spoiler. Its not difficult to attach a window spoiler. How you managed to fail at it really surprises me.
Crazy glue? Come on, thats just plain retarded.
As far as I know of, your the first to have this issue. Mine fit the windsheild just fine.

I bought mine from E-Bay. Had no mounting tape went to Home Depot and got some 3M Heavy Duty double sided tape. Grey inside with red outer tape. 3yrs so far, no problems. Other than the gel coating is faded......

3m tape works even better (re: CRAZY) if you heat it, for future reference. But it's to bad you're getting it put back on, those things are ugly as ****.

Have the 3g heavy duty on mine and it works great. Just had to clean the window and the spoiler.

As far as your rear window, that sucks.

You said you cleaned the surfaces with windex... I don't think that's enough. I know when I did mine, I had the 3m red-back stuff. There is a prep pad (which is basically rubbing alcohol) that you apply to the spoiler and window and let dry. Then there is an 3m adhesive promoter that also put on both surfaces. I had no problem and I did this in like 40 degree weather too. I've had no problems at all.
