fuel system treatment...should we use it from the beginning?

Curious about everyone's thoughts on this....I have 7500 miles on it now and haven't used anything yet...is it beneficial this early?

Snake Oil

The only liquid that should be in your fuel tank is GAS. There's enough detergent in today fuels to keep your fuel system clean.

it doesnt hurt to put it in once in awhile. I look at the stuff as preventative maintenance. It certainly doesnt hurt.

I have a 4th gen and i use it every other wk. U have a newer car so i say use it every month or less, especially if u using 87 octane

Naw man...some of the cheaper places dont use the same additives. Shell has the cleanest IMO

I say no. Use it only when needed. If you maintain your car well and use good fuel, you shouldn't need it. Stick to BP, Shell, etc.

I use the Lucas Oil Upper Cylinder Lubricant about every 5 tanks or so. I usually buy my gas on the military base which uses various local suppliers and I don't always know which fuel I'm using.

Maybe it's all in my head, but it does seem to run a bit better and improves mileage. At least it gives me a warm fuzzy.

I have an 06 with 30k miles,

Previously owned by an old man that probably never got over 55MPH, or 2500RPM lol

Every time I get on the throttle hard it smells like rotten eggs and smoke out the tail pipes.

clogged cats? ? ?

i think as long as you use good fuel from the start you are fine.

I bought a subaru a while ago and noticed and wasnt getting very good milage after my first few tanks but after 2 tanks of fuel injector cleaner i gained about 4 mpg. I could definitely feel and quantify that it helped things out

I don't see how anyone can consider it snake oil...these treatments are proven to work on many deposit issues, and redistribute water buildup/tank contaminants so they can be flushed through over time.

It really doesn't matter how good you think the fuel is that you're getting, or how many detergents they claim to have, you're going to get deposits and buildup inside. It's possible to get bad gas, or something different at the pump, and you'd never know it unless you're testing every service pump and tank for proper consistencies and detergents.

Also don't discount the air getting in, even filtered, it can contribute to the buildup along with fuel.

I prefer Lucas, it's widely renowned, and I've personally seen improvements in engines with miles on them. Even mine with only 30,000 showed mileage improvements after the first use. With regular use, about once every couple of months, I'm not seeing any new improvements, but I've not lost any performance or efficiency since I started using it right after I got the car at 20,000...

You're car is new enough, it may not do a whole lot until you put some more miles on it. But like I said, i got mine with around 20,000 and it wasn't running as good as it could.

I even did the seafoam treatment into a suction hose on the intake before the lucas. Seafoam gave me a few performance points, but the fuel treatment is what gave me efficiency overall.

Seafoam FTW

Just thought I'd share my incredible results with Seafoam. My 04 Max currently has 88,000 miles on it and I purchased it with 75,000 already on the clock. I have used the Lucas fuel treatment a few times and noticed slight increases in MPG.

The past few weeks the car has felt a bit sluggish on acceleration and I have only been getting between 250 - 280 miles out of a 16 gallon tank of 92 octane. A few days ago I put in a bottle of Seafoam with a fresh tank of Shell gas. The car has lost its hesitation and I am now at 335 miles on one tank with about 1/8 tank left!

I'm so impressed with the Seafoam and hope everyone else can get similar results.

This is normal. I experienced this the first few dozen times I really stood on the pedal with my 2000 SE, my 2004 SL and my 2009 SV. The smell does indeed remind me of rotten eggs. It is probably the cats. Whatever it is, it gradually diminishes over time. Other posters have reported this same thing on the 5th, 6th and 7th gen boards. The first owner of your car obviously did not stand on the pedal very much.

Of course there will be all kinds of opinions on this, but I personally have never used an additive in my cars in sixty-one years of driving. If there were a serious question about the quality of the gas, or if I were in a situation where my car was sometimes going to be sitting unused for a week or more, I would use the gas treatment. For instance, I always use a gas additive in my riding mower, because it sits unused much of the winter months.

The good thing here is that most gas treatments do no harm, so if they make you feel better about things, then go with it.

I've been using one once every month or one every 4th fill up. Since its a 96 with 130K miles i use BP Ultimate, i can say i gained about 2-4 mpg mixed driving. I'm not sure what the previous owner of it was using and i didn't ask, but I'm guessing if you take care of it from the beginning with good gas you shouldn't have a need to use treatment.
