While the mandatory reissuance of license plates has been cancelled, the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) will begin issuing new Empire Gold (blue and gold) vehicle plates in place of the current Empire (blue and white) plates beginning April 1, 2010. The Empire Gold plates will be phased in gradually as the stock of Empire plates is depleted. Even though your Empire (blue and white) plates will still be valid on your vehicle, those plates will no longer be issued by the DMV when current stocks are gone.
I don't think they look that bad, honestly. I was expecting to come in here and find a mandatory law stating all NY vehicles had to have a tag on their hood when you said your car wasn't a taxi cab.
One thing I don't miss about living in NY...they have a "fee" for every. Effing. Thing.

I actually remember the old yellow-on-black on my father's 1966 AMC Rambler. Hideous color scheme (on a hideous car, for that matter.)
OP, you're getting your panties all bunched up for nothing. It's optional. And even if it weren't, what's the big deal? There are far more important events in life to worry about.
