Run-In with Dodge Viper GTS

Run-In with Dodge Viper GTS
Hi everyone. Tonight on my way home from school (around 9:30pm) I was driving on a main highway (it has lights though) with two lanes in either direction. Anyway, I was behind a SUV in the left lane, about to pass a Viper GTS (Blue with White Stripes). The Viper had temp. plates and the owner looked young. I already put my stock 96 GLE rims back on for the winter so I didn't think he would try and race me, but I was wrong. As soon as I passed him, going about 60mph, he rode my bumper. I decided to have some fun and gun it, passing the SUV on the right, then going back to the left lane in front of the SUV. The Viper stayed right behind me. I kept the petal down and hit 115 with him still up my rear. I did not use my Nitrous because the bottle isn't in my car (I need to go for an inspection this week). There were two cars at a red light (one in each lane) and I used my e-brake to start slowing down (this always upsets drivers behind me!). The Viper, stupid kid, pulled to the right and gunned it. I guess he didn't realize the stopped cars and nearly hit them slowing to a screetching halt. I pulled up slowly laughing sooo hard. I know he could have killed me, but he looked sooo dumb. That was the last light in the stretch and he took the next exit. I held my own against the Viper...I never lost him, but he didn't get in front nor get next to me and pull away. He went with me from 60-120...so much fun. Sorry for the long story...first run-in with a Viper...next time I hope to have my bottle in the car...I will give him a run for his money. BTW, GTS's run around 13.8's in the 1/4...just to give you an idea.
Thanks,
Erik
Thanks,
Erik

from how he was describing the driver...I dont think that kid would hit 12.3.

Well, first of all, I think I should be laughing at the way he drove. Secondly, the Viper stats were direct from Dodge. I will scan it later this weekend. I did state he would kill me, but I said I would give him a run...I doubt this kid could walk away from me...he almost killed himself tonight...120 into a stopped car might have hurt a bit.

Ok...I looked up online an got these stats...someone is off:
PERFORMANCE (GTS)
0-60 mph 4.0 seconds
0-100 mph 9.2 seconds
Street Start, 5-60 mph 4.5 seconds
Standing 1/4-mile 12.3 sec @ 115 mph
Top speed (drag limited) 177 mph
PERFORMANCE (RT-10)
0-60 mph 4.0 seconds
0-100 mph 8.7 seconds
Street start, 5-60 mph 4.6 seconds
Standing 1/4-mile 12.2 sec @ 118 mph
Top speed (drag limited) 177 mph
Dodge does not give these specs online. I will look for the book the dealer gave me last time I test drove one. Vipers are not easy cars to drive, I highly doubt everyday drivers could get close to 4 second 0-60...or the 12 1/4...besides these #'s can't be accurate...when I went to the dealer they told me they got into 12's but with pro's driving...mostly high 13's...

Well I'm not too concerned about the 1/4 mile time here, however I will state that I have seen GTS run 12.2-12.4 at the track. This is about a NA Maxima holding it's own on the highway with a Viper GTS. Unless the driver was toying with you there is no way you could hang with a Viper. The Viper would pull on a 993 TT Porsche on the highway.

hes just saying he had fun... you guys dont have to always get so technical. its like when i posted up i ran a ferrari f355, i was guning it, redlining and he pulled away. and someone posted up "he wasnt racing" hmm, so if he granny shifts that should be what? 3 times stronger then me shifting at 6500rpm? usually i dont see people driving such nice cars like that.
anyhow, glad you had fun playing with the gts
anyhow, glad you had fun playing with the gts

LOL!!
Drove a viper and drive a maxima you would easily lose from 60-120 Nos'd or NA with your best of 13.8.. Inexperienced 5spd Max drivers don't lose more than a second of their 1/4 mile times so what make you think a 12.2 second viper will lose 1.6 secs??

This thread = teh funney
You can be sure the driver of the Viper didn't use more than 50-75% throttle at the most in 5th or 6th gear. I raced a viper in my se-r and it wasn't pretty. In just a 40-60mph run I lost by a buslength and then some before I even hit my shift point for the 2-3 shift!

God you guys are so quick to jump down his throat... read his story again - he's not talking about beating a vivper or even racing one - he's saying he had fun with a stupid driver. Guess what - if the right lane was packed he could have been in a ford festiva and the viper wouldn't pass him.
Chill out - you guys are such ****** some times.

HAHA oh my... i remember august i smoked a viper with my 96 5spd...
poor viper..
joke ;-)
but yeah i did see one when i went to toronto... i was on the 401 and he was just starting to get on it... a bit behind me. I slowed down a bit so i could have him catch up. I had literally NO INTENTION to race him. I just wanted to get beside him to check out the viper in motion. so i did just that. i looked at him and he look at me...
i was happy with my sighting... decided to drop it a gear and start moving away... not fast either. all of a sudden i see him just take the f$%k off like NUTS... so i floor it just to see how fast he is. Needless to say he just kept going goin goin... oh my.. i like vipers
hahaha
fast cars... damn

They do this out here to cover against theft and damage for people who don't know how to drive a car with that much power. The guy I was with was loaded so no issue, but what a car. Hmmmm?

I've rolled into an Audi dealer in a '99 SL500 and nobody paid any attention to me or my friend. They know that 99% of the time its gonna be his dad's car and he has very little chance of buying the car w/o him. I've also gone to BMW dealers in a 3 month old M3 and they still don't give you a second look.
Dealers usually see a person's age as the defining factor in how likely you'll buy a car. I've driven a beater Accord to the Acura dealer and they wouldn't so much as let me test drive an Integra while my dad drives the same car to a BMW dealer and they're falling over themselves to get him into a new 740iL. Non luxury dealers were usually a lot better about it though. Honda dealers kept pushing me to take home Preludes for test drives even before I turned 18.

Ok, I read the post (twice) and the responses. No, you didn't say that you "won" against the Viper, just that you held him off.
But this is what got you in trouble -
"next time I hope to have my bottle in the car...I will give him a run for his money. BTW, GTS's run around 13.8's in the 1/4...just to give you an idea.
No, with a bottle you will NOT give him a run for his money, even if he is a cr@ppy shifter. Dude, you're living in dreamland. I used to work on them, and have driven somewhere around 50 different Vipers over the years, stock and modified.
You may be able to beat him to 60 if he can't shift worth a snot, but after that, even a dumb@ss could make this car go quick - shifting is taken less into consideration.
Like I said, you get a bad enough driver, you can beat anything. But most Viper owners that can even shift with average ability can cream you, even though they might not "rip" perfect shifts everytime. There is no secret to shifting the car, just controlling wheelspin from the launch and second gear.
Until you have about 400 HP and the same Torque, you will not be giving him a run for his money.

Actually no.. i know a maxima with under 400 hp that can run a viper..

With that much power there is a lot more to it then shifting...since you worked on them, I am sure you drove them. If you have, you would know that launching is not easy...there is massive wheelspin from the torque...with the bottle I would give this kid a run for his money..NOT EVERY VIPER OR EVERY VIPER DRIVER...JUST THIS KID. That is why I said HIM...I would give HIM a run for his money. He had a chance to pass me and he blew it...face it, he was a bad driver. You can't honestly say to race someone all you need is a fast car...there are other factors...good launch, judging lane changes, etc., as far as I could tell this kid couldn't drive...he just had a fast car.

Ok, this is getting bad
My dad's best friend has a Viper GTS that has the hennessey550 package on it. Even before he had it sent to Texas, it would spin the tires at 100! You need a towel for that wet dream? j/k

jesus, that is crazy...I can't imagine doing that. Really easy to spin everywhere spinning tires at 100, the rear ends gotta be all over the place.
