Skid plates for the slammed...

Has anyone looked into this for these? Primarily to protect the oil pan?

I dont need the peanut gallery coming in here saying 'if you cant drive slammed go home.' I drive at least 60 miles round trip everyday back and forth to work (going to increase with this new side job i just picked up yesterday) and i'd like to have an extra piece of mind that even though i'll be riding low, my oil pan will be protected and my car wont be stranded on the side of the road for random jerks/low lifes that have nothing to do but to vandalize my car.

Funny, since I've been researching coils I've been thinking about this too. Yesterday in fact...

i'm thinking its going to have to be a modded/fabbed piece with the bolt option. i need to find the thread with the guy that did some mock up for the track to help with aerodynamics...what he has would be a good starting point i believe, but i forgot what the thread was about and what his name is

peanut gallery right here . Someone had started a thread like this on nycmaximas but i don't think it ever panned out. Might want to use that thread as a starting point if you can find it

So many slammed Maximas, I'm surprised more people don't do this. Especially in NYC etc. If you end up doing it phatboi, you should start a thread about it. Can we just get a random steel plate welded in somewhere that'll protect the oil pan? I dunno where you'd weld it...

i wouldnt weld it...id place/bolt it where i can still easily drop oil, but if necessary for repairs of something, remove it (unbolt it). if i check it out and do something ill put it in this thread i'm not going to start another thread about it

You're more than likely to hit the crossmember/rad support on something before you hit the oil pan. The lower pan sits up pretty high in the engine.

Of course, I guess you could fabricate something that you could just bolt to the crossmember and runs the entire length of the front undercarriage. Those four bolts should be more than enough to hold it in place.

Yea thats something of what i'm thinking about...i guess i need to get under there and fully inspect what has the 'best' chance of getting screwed granted theres a manhole that sits higher than expect, know what i mean

I've run over a few of those said manholes. The worst I've managed to do is dent my OBX headers ever so slightly. And my car is pretty low.

Ive love tapped it a couple times, but about an hour ago, I hit my x member pretty good at a local burger joint and it surprised the hell out of me because I KNOW their parking lot to have NO dips/potholes. But now it has a huge dip like fold a bit after the entrance. That hard week long rain that SoCal had recently LITERALLY made a grip of new potholes or exacerbated existing ones badly.

I was lucky to get one of the few 3.5's that doesn't burn oil. 135K miles and still not burning much.

This is true. I'll hit the crossmember, headers, and the b-pipe if i'm not careful. On the highway at night, if I dont notice a dip in the road, you will see sparks fly. But this is from the crossmember. I dont remember seing any marks on my oil pan the last time I was under the car. But I wasnt really checking for that. My crossmember on the other hand is damn near completely chrome.

ok...so the consensus is...theres no NEED for a skid plate, only get if you feel for it...especially seeing as though essential is slammed all day long

Ive often times thought of running a diamond plate skid plate. Ive hit my b-pipe, and cat a few times and dont even get me started on the front point of the engine cradle. And Im not even that how

Yup. Sure it wont hurt a thing and is good for piece of mind that you wont damage anything. But you should be fine unless your planning on going lower than where I am. (Over 4.5" from stock)

I was thinking about this mod for the past month, as we've experienced severe rainfall recently. Humidity = foggy windows = running AC. Well, splashed a few puddles that got water on the belts and compressor. AC system wasn't happy. Belt started squeeling, and AC button light flashed, and AC no longer conditioning the air... Air still blew, but it was humid icky air.

Anyways, I was thinking of a metal piece molded from the existing splash guard beneath the radiator. Use that as a template but extend it's reach further back to protect the oilpan and sensors down there. This piece would replace that cheezy plastic thing down there (that for many, is already tore up, or missing entirely). Mounting will be using existing holes.

Another concern would be aerodynamics. Is there anything down there that shouldn't be covered for lack of airflow?

And lastly, how much would you pay for something like this?

Dr J

I crawl under the front and spray paint the cross member every once in awhile to keep the rust down on the scrapes.
