The future of the of my maxima

This is pretty long, but replies would be usefull.

Right now I drive my mom's old 91 GXE. The paint is in horrible condition with about a million scratches and the hood has lost it's clearcoat (resulting in a weird problem about turning waterspots chalk-white. It looks horrible). I've fixed the interior back to the way it was before my siblings wrecked it, but it could still use some new floormats. Anyway, my sisters is turning 16 on August 7th. My parents are cheap, and still recovering from my mom buying an RX300. They won't buy me or my sister another car. Truthfully, I wouldn't care if my sister got the VW bug she dreams of having, I just want to keep a car for myself.

When my sister turns 16, we're supposed to share the car. My mom wants to do this cause the insurance for my sis is cheaper than mine. My sister has a sharing problem, though. I'm afraid (and for good reasons) that my sister and I will have big fights over who can have the car when. I'm gonna NEED it for yearbook and she's gonna not WANT to ride the bus. It'll be even worse when I want to go over to my friends house when she wants to go to the mall or something.

Anyways, I've been planning on buying my friends 2k1 GLE. He'll sell it to me for $5k, no prob. I'll be payin that much for insurance every year, though. I've tried convincing my parents to sign the maxima under my dad's name, and the 89 pathfinder under mine, and i'd pay the pathfinders insurance, but they won't do it. Since there is just about no way to make $5k a year and still have time to keep up with school, I told him to sell it as long as he gives me frequent rides in his Supra (with the $20k plus his dads $10k, he can actually afford one). I decided to wait to get a car until a week after my sisters bday. I figured this would show my parents that the sharing thing wasn't gonna work, and they'de be a bit more sympathetic to me buyin a car. I'd go out and get a late 3rd gen max or a 240sx or somethin. Keep the insurance relatively low.

My mom keeps sayin I'm not gonna get a car. She claims I have first dibs on the maxima, but even I know that's just gonna **** my sister off and start even more conflict.

Now, I've been savin up to get a car for quite a while now. I started thinkin about it, and realized I wouldn't be drivin very much during college. I guess I'd have to find a job that I could walk or take a bus to or somethin. That's what raised my questions:

Should I hold off getting a car at all until after college so I'll have enough to go out and get a NICE car, or should I get a cheap one after my sis's bday and avoid the confrontation, but be more flexible in college?

First of all do you have 5000? If so, buy the car. Dont get full coverage(should be around 75-100 month for you if your under 25) and be "driven". Otherwise buy the car for 5000, sell it for 17500 (or how much ever) and buy something else. Then you have the car ,money, and no BOOHOO sister. Good luck, Charles

Ooooooooooooooooor, I will buy it for 5000, and GIVE you my car for free

No. Get a car of your own. Any car. I drove a $500 1989 Dodge Omni around for 2 years. Yeah maybe you get something that you didn't really want, but it's wheels. I don't know where you plan on going to school, but you'll probably want/need a car. You can't really take a girl on a date on the bus.

Where do you live though that insurance is going to cost $5k a year? Unless you've totalled several cars and are in an assigned high risk category I just can't see it. Do not skimp on your insurance as someone else has suggested. Do not rely on your friends or anyone else for rides. Get your own car. But, make sure you get one you can afford.

I think you need to talk to the insurance agent yourself. I see from your profile that you live in Texas. Texas = cheap car insurance. I live in Michigan (one of the more expensive states) and $5k a year is off the wall. Unless you call and find out from the insurance agent yourself I'd say that pricing is highly suspect.

For example my 2002 State Farm quoted me $2550 a year for full colisions (which I thought was highway robbery) so I talked to AAA and they quoted me $1350 for the same level of coverage. Shop around for insurance. I just don't see how it would be $5k. Some insurance places give discounts if you have good grades in school (which you may not). Most give discounts if you take extra driving classes. Find the place that's going to give you the best deal.

I live just outside of Houston, in Harris county. The insurance in Harris county is more expensive than any other place in the entire state. I we lived several miles north, I could actually afford to keep the 2k1 GLE.

Here's why it would be $5k:
1) My parents won't let me get anythin but full coverage
2) Harris county is most expensive insurance in state
3) Brand new, fairly expensive car
4) I'm about to turn 17
5) My parents would not tie me to there insurance (discount), I'd be a totally seperate individual

Here is the basic outline:

Buy the '01 Max for 5k or your the biggest fool I've ever heard of. You can turn right around and sell that and make like 13k profit! I seriously don't know what your friend is thinking. I mean ya a deal would be cool but that is just outright giving it away. You better thank the hell outta him.

Secondly, I don't know where the hell this 5,000 to insure a maxima came from. My dad payed $500 a year! My 17 year old friend pays around 2500 for his 2001 SVT Lightning. 5,000 for a family sedan? I don't think so.

that rate for insurance is wayyyyy off. I live in Cali-with really high rates, am 16yrs old, and have to pay under 2000. Also, buy the max for 5k. Whether or not you keep it, you can make a ton of money off of it. Also, why is your friend selling his max for 5k?

First off, my friend is givin me the car for $5k for several reasons. He's gettin it from his uncle and he doesn't really like the way it looks. He'd rather go out and get a Supra (damn richers). Now, his uncle wouldn't be too happy if he got the max, then sold it a little while later and pocket the $20k for himself (after all, his uncle could have just done that). On the other hand, sellin me the max would be like helpin a friend out. He'd be happy he'd have some decent competition against whatever fast car he gets, and I'd be happy to have a car at all.

I talked to him about the situation. He said he was actually disapointed he couldn't sell it to me, and he'd rather not I sell it. Basically, if I got the maxima, I'd have to keep it. I'll see him on Monday, when school starts again, and I'll see if I can talk him into lettin me trade it in for something else. Don't think it's gonna happen, though.

About the insurance...I haven't really done any research about it. I've asked my parents, and I think they're using scare tactics or something. I keep askin them how much it'll cost to insure a brand new maxima, and they say around $5k. The reason I don't call BS is because the insurance right now for my 91 GXE is $2200 a year, and I have a perfect record.

If anyone lives in the Houston area, I bet he'd sell it for pretty cheap (say, about $15k or so). And, how much would it cost to insure a 17 year old in Harris county driving a 2k1 GLE with a perfect record?

What '30-day log thing'? If I can take driving classes too, I will. Anything to keep this deal solid! If I can drop my insurance down pretty low, I may be able to convince my parents to let me get it.

This isn't the F&F, I know my maxima woulnd't have a chance in hell keeping up with a supra. Probably a modified one at that. With a lot of work (and I mean a LOT), mabye I could prevent from gettin severely walked by him. The point is, against a 2k1 GLE he'd at least have to push the throttle half way down to keep me in his rear-view mirror. Against my 91 GXE, he could leave the thing in 1st and still tear me a new *******.

Well, lets see...

2k1 GLE (225hp and auto) - $5000
95 SE (190hp and manual) - $6000

While the insurance on the 95 may be cheaper, I might as well save it and get a much better and much newer car. I just wish the 2k1 was manual. I'd sell off everything I own to keep the car if that's what it took. Here's the twist. The 2k1 is majestic blue (at least navy blue as my friend describes it). The only 2k1's in dark blue were SE's. Mabye I am gettin a manual. Mabye I'm not. I'll find out in a couple months when the maxima is down here.

-Please, don't corect me for sayin I'm gettin a 2k1 GLE. I know it doesn't excist too. I'm gonna find out about the color early spring.
