100 octane, what a gas...

Pulled into a 76 gas station in San Jose,CA and see the standard 87,89,91 nozzle then I notice the other side of the pump, “100 OCTANE RACING GAS”, unleaded. Couldn’t pass this one up. !! Paid 4.09 gallon (ouch) X 4 then added 8gl 91. Talk about fire-in-the-hole! Should be ‘bout 95 octane?? Any of you ever run this stuff at full strength on a stock VQ30? Will octane in a bottle be a better way to go? I shouldn’t feel so bad bout $$ ‘caus the Saleen SC next to me said he fills-up at this $ at least once a week.

Probably will not do anything as your engine is designed for XX octane anyway. Anymore is just a waste

Total waste of your money. If the car wasnt designed for it, it can actually hurt performance.

Not sure about the newer VQ, but the older VE does nothing no matter what you put in it!

I dont think it would do anything performance wise other than stop pre-ignition

The ECM senses a signal from the knock sensor and retards the car's timing, thus 87 octane does not make the engine ping{maybe one ping}. Of course, anything less the 91 octane on the maxima will hinder performance and give worse fuel economy.

100 octane is for those die hard racers that gave their car implants

it'll let you run some more boost, or make it safer to use nitrous. That sounds like a good fuel to run a SC and a 50 shot to me. Wish it was readily available around here. If you're talking about normal aspiration though thats just throwing money away.

hope you don't mess up your O2 sensors or cat. I have heard this happens with race fuel.

Higher octane wont do much for our cars. If anything, you might even burn a piston ring running too high of an octane. I dont think our cars push enough power to use such a high octane rating. I have ran my car down past E and filled it with Sunoco 110+ race gas and i noticed nothing different at all.

Hell, i think i feel more using octane booster.

Yeah. But higher the octane the SLOWER the gas burns. Common misconception. So you wouldn't burn a piston. But you might clog a Cat maybe if they use lead to up the octane ratings.

As far as Teles.net, who knows what he's talking about. F1 tranny?

yeah as jeff92se pointed out, the higher octane (above the VQ requirement) is basically wasted. although our manual says we need at least 91, i think that is a conservative octane rating. i've recently switched to 87 (from 93) and noticed no performance problems.

(4/12)100+(8/12)91 = 94
