Mitsubishi Vs. Nissan?

Can anybody give me some insight into the Mitsubishi Galant? How does it compare the the Altima or Max? Are Mitsu's pieces of junk or are they up there with Nissans? I've been searching for a car for my wife and I own a Max, but I've been looking at Altimas, Camrys, Accords, but now I came across the Galant which seems a little cheaper than those cars I mentioned.

um your on a Nissan site what do you expect the answer to be? Mitsu are good cars they just dont hold their value unless this little word is at the end of the model name: Evolution.

But the truth of the matter is which is often over looked almost all Asian cars use Mitsubishi sensors and electronics.

Buy another Nissan.
I do not recommend the "M" word.

Maybe a newer Galant will be cool, dont know what year you a are looking at though, I would get Camry as 1st choice then Altima, then a Galant...

Since the car is for your wife you want her to be in something reliable and your on the right road but get a camry or accord then third choice is altima and last is galant.

I've owned two Mitsubishi Galants (1996 & 2002). The 2002 was my most recent before I got my Max and it held up well. I've owned the 02 since 2005 (42,000 miles) and when I had purchased my max in 8/2012 my Galant had 180,000 miles. I kept up on the maintenance especially out here in Vegas. Mitsubishi's are underrated and very good cars. Repair costs are low and easy to maintain. I hope this provide some feedback on your search

There is a 4g63 turbo AWD galant somewhere around in NJ. Guy did a full evo 8 swap. Reliability wise i'd probably get an accord over the nissan or mitsu tbh.
I really only like the older dsm's and evo's from mitsubishi.

I rented a 2011 or 2012 Galant a while back and my 4th gen feels more solid and has a better ride quality. It felt like i was on a boat the whole time while driving that galant lol

Although the galant definitely feels and is faster than my 97.

Mitsubishi is crap. Every person I've known that had a Mitsubishi hated it because the engine crapped out. Ironically, every person I've known that owned a Nissan (including myself) loves them for reliability. You don't get that with a Mitsubishi unless it's a Lancer, and even that's pushing it. I've come to realize Nissan's are overall better than Mitsubishi's. I've ridden in and dealt with many of both manufactures, and Nissan wins tenfold. Mitsubishi's only a small step ahead of KIA in my opinion.

Psh. Doesn't matter where I'm from. I'll point out a piece of crap when I see it. Haha. I give KIA some credit though. Nowhere near as bad as they used to be. Same with Hyundai. I'd consider Hyundai a good manufacturer now. KIA still isn't at the same level though. But they're trying.

Well kia is the lesser brand. Gotta keep costs relatively low in order to get rid of their korean junk stigma. I personally don't really care too much for their cars but I won't scoff at them anymore.

The Galant was never a good selling car, and Mitsu finally killed it this year.

My brother had an older one, around the early 2000s, and it was a pretty good car. Unfortunately, his now ex-wife really did a number on the car.

If you can pick one up for cheap and it's been taken care of, I say go for it. However, if it's been neglected, expect to pony up some cash to get it right, just like any other car that hasn't been taken care of very well.

most modern cars have "interference" type engines and will cause valve damage if the timing belt breaks.

but thats why you buy a max that has a timing chain. metal > rubber.

But yall already knew that!

I'm sure someone has done an engine swap on a galant. But in all seriousness I'm sure somebody's grandmas galant is a smooth running car. However from my experience i have noticed from people i've known with mitsu's is that they just can't handle the nearly as much abuse as the maxes or accords(including evo's).

I had an eclipse for a couple months. Maybe drove it 3 times. Everytime something would break on it. I'm not even kidding. Such a shame because it was such a good looking car. I traded it off for a 98 Srad Gsxr.

I might sound like an old man whining about how things are better back in the old days, but seriously. Most new car interiors feel and look cheap.

I have rented quite a few cars all in the 2008-2012 range and all the interiors feel the same. Gray plastic, with a lighter gray plastic pretending to be leather, and plastic plastic. Goddamn plastic everywhere! And I hate the way the dashes are nowadays and how high it is. I want to see whats like directly in front of my car even though I dont need to, dammit.

And don't they know how short Asian people are? Jesus.

Well I don't have too much to add because I haven't ever owned a Mitsubishi but IMHO I would say that 4G63 > VQ35...

I think next spring I'm gonna let my Max go for an Evo 8 or 9.

Same with my Galant. Had it for 7 years and it had 180,000 miles on it when I gave it to my brother last year, after the purchase of my max.It still runs good for an 11 year old car. I was really strict with my maintenance

Mitsubishi aren't bad cars, my first two cars were Mitsubishi Galant a 89' and a 94', love them both but the resales on those cars were very poor, but the reliablity and quailty build back in the day were rock solid, til the late 90's that's where quality were short on the list and reliablity has gone downhill from there. That's why you don't see very many Mitsu on the road today nor their model line up has been shrunk, which Mitsu will eventually disappear in the US market. Just like Suzuki and Isuzu fate.

Mitsu is going downhill because theyre turning into hippies, i think theyre still not making a Evo 11 to be more "environmentally conscious"

Had a Salvage '01 Galant for 4 years which was trouble free...they're great cars but alongside my '95, it felt cheap all around.. so it all depends on your priorities. If you're looking for a DD, get the Max

The Mitsu was great in late 80s and early 90s. The Mitsubishi galant VR4 with 2.0 liter turbo and AWD AND 4WS was a head of its time, although it was a pain in the butt to maintain. This is before the world caught on fire with Honda VTec and Subaru boxer engine. For some reason they went downhill after the introduction of Eclipse. The EVO was great especially in Asia and Australia.

If there is a Mitsu I'm getting is the VR4. I had one when I was in college, blew the rings because I didn't know what I was doing.

What I don't like about the newer galants is that the Technology isn't anywhere close to ANY other Japanese car companies, I suppose that's because the galant has been phasing out for the last 3 years now and is finally gone. 09 Was the last model year for the V6, which was poor on gas. Now all they have is the 4 cyl Auto with 4 gears...horrible !

If Mitsu wanted the Galant to sell anywhere near as well as the Nissans Hondas and Toyotas they should have updated there damn car !

However I cannot knock their reliability we have an 05 ES in our fleet that has Not been well maintained and it continues to hold up and drive up and down the parkway 3 times a week with over 120,000 on the clock on the original timing belt. The 4 banger engine sounds like a tin can under the hood but has a Honda sound to it while revving, its crazy.

So far so good for the Transmission too, even though the fluid is now a dark brown color its still shifts with a good crisp feel to it. The biggest repair we were FORCED to make was an axle replacement at 110,000 miles. Oil changes every 6000 miles somehow keeps it running so you know what for what Mitsubishi is worth these days I really can't knock them at all !

From experience. a Mitsubishi as the last Japanese car company I would ever buy. But if you do get the gallant, buy two so you have one to drive while one is in the shop

I just read that Mitsubishi and Volvo will stop selling cars in the U.S. after this year. They each have only about 3.8% of the market and it is too costly to make a car with the U.S. standards and only have that small of a market share. Suzuki gave up last year in case anyone cares.

Mistu doesn't surprise me, but Volvo as well? That's shocking. Suzuki.........isn't that a lawnmower????

Oh yea, and to be honest, the Gallant isn't a bad car per sa', but I wouldn't want one. My ex had one and although it ran well, it just had that cheap feeling that Nissans DO NOT have.

If you're desperate, get the Gallant. If you can hold out and wait, I'd go with something of the aforementioned.

EDIT - I just noticed this thread is a bunch of months old, so what did you go with?

I've owned two Mitsubishi's, and they were quite good and lasted very long.
