Need Help Deciding 5spd Or Auto Rebuild

OK I NEED HELP DECIDING AND HERE ARE THE DETAILS.

I BLEW MY TRANNY ON MY 96 MAXIMA GLE WITH 36K MILES (I ONLY OWNED IT FOR 8K). I TOOK IT TO THE SHOP AND THE REBUILD IS TOTAL 1500 (I GOT THEM DOWN FROM 2590). I ALREADY OWE THE SHOP 460 FOR TAKING IT OFF AND TESTING. SO DO I SPEND THE OTHER 1040 ON A REBUILD OF MY AUTO WITH PERFORMANCE CLUTCHES OR DO I TAKE THE CAR HOME AND DO THE 5SPD CONVERSION MYSELF WHICH WILL PROBABLY COST ME 1300 (PLUS THE 460 FOR THE SHOP). SO WHAT WOULD YOU DO? I NEED ANSWERS ASAP. THANKS.

Also might want to consider the type of traffic where you live/work... 5 spds can be annoying if you have to spend a considerable amount of time in bumper to bumper, stop and go traffic...

Same here. I drive the 405 in SoCal every day. If you know how to drive, you will be fine. I don't even notice anymore. Much better on your brakes too.

no he had thomas do it

i don't know if thomas charged him or not.. but usually a 5spd tranny goes for $500 .. you guys can do the math on everything else.. a good shop should do a swap for $600

That's good to know. I am mechanically inept and when my auto goes I want to convert to 5 sp. Any reliability issue with converting that you know of.
