I need more speed!
Help, I drive a 97 SE stick, and I feel the need to move on. I got sick of eating all the riced out mistubishi eclipses and civics. But now I seem to have gotten the attention of the american v8 crowd from camaros to mustangs. Uh oh, big challenge to maxima. The v6 models are easy to hang with, and sometimes beat. I have a cone K&N filter and thats it in terms of performance. Also got a rear sway bar. So, let me cut to the chase, what mods will actually give *significant* improvements in speed. Supercharger people, please tell me your experiences. This is what I ultimately plan to do. What are the specs AFTER completion, times, as well as cost. I am very mechanically inclined and capable of installing the charger myself. Who sells it for the cheapest?
Get the SC
I have had one on my 90,000 mile Maxima for about 3,000 miles and it runs great. I got the SC used from a previous owner of a 97 who was selling his car so I got a great discount on it. Generally they will cost about $3400 brand new from Stillen and they are not about to come down on the price so no luck finding it for cheaper. Installation costs about $1000 and it shoud take about 2-3 days for an experienced shop to do the install. Mine took a week b/c this was the first install on a Maxima and this was all new to them.
I have nothing but good things to say about my SC. The power is always there, the SC whine makes me grin ear to ear and I love the rush of boost after 3000RPMs. I have suffered in gas mileage after my computer relearned how to run with the SC but that is to be expected. I usually got around 400 miles to the tank w/o the SC and now I get around 250-300 miles with the SC depending on my driving habits.
As far as other modifications go I would do the following performance mods:
Cattman Performance y-pipe
Random Technology 2.5" catalytic converter
Greddy cat-back exhuast
Cattman Performance CAI if your car will not be SC'ed
Build a custom CAI if you plan on putting on a SC'er
Courtesy Nissan/Stillen b-pipe (if you have money left over to burn)
Check out my webpage for details on my buildup as well as videos.
