What is the purpose of the ground strap attached to the muffler?

What is the purpose of the ground strap attached to the muffler?

I have not noticed anything not working after seeing the strap broken in half.

It's for the o2 sensor iirc.

Thanks for the reply. What is the affect if the sensor is not grounded? Gas mileage? I have no lights or codes.

Maybe milage, but I would definitely assume emissions.

The primaries usually have more to do with fuel regulating than the secondaries.

never seen one on a muffler, but a rubber hanger. but I do see one by the secondary cat converter, it's just a ground to the body, since the exhaust system can not be touched to the body due to extreme heat, so it has to be grounded some way to keep from static electricity, so hence the ground strap

It could have been the cat, I looked at it a long time ago. It' been broken for a while and I am not getting any small static shocks.
