Front lip RIPPED off today on the highway!

$%#@*)$@^*$@#*^)@$@&!()!)@*%)*%@)!_*%()!_

WELL, today at 7:20am on the way to school with my friend, I was in the left passing lane. I was just cruisin along at 70mph when I hear this strange noise. I adjust my sunroof but it still didnt go away. Then I hear a loud clunch and I turn to him and go Oh SHlT thats the lip! So I quickly cross the lanes onto the emergency lane as im slowing down I hear a loud THUMP and I look in my rearview mirror and see my lip flying into the feild. Well at this point I am VERY .

We go over to pick it up. What was it's condition ? It has been ripped to shreads. It has 3 holes in it from where the highway ripped it open, scratches everywhere, and is broken near the left side.

I am soo sad right now becuase I just got that thing painted professionally and with my own money (which doesnt grow on trees, especially for young students), and a couple days later it is ruined. My max looks naked without it. I cant believe this has happened to me.

Has this happened to any of you guys ? We used the little stock screws and screwed the lip in at both ends, and used 3m tape in the middle of the lip. My guess is that the tape lost its grip and the high pressure highway air got inside of it and ripped it off. The place where we screwed the screws in was ripped up. It is metal and it has been shredded straight through.

Who else's money could it have been otherwise?

If it was professionally painted was it installed by them? Perhaps you can tell them what happened and even if they don't fix it they'll know better if they work on someone else's car. Just like when I was filling up my car the pump didn't stop and maybe a few gallons pumped all over the ground. At least I wanted them to shut off that pump so it didn't happen to someone else.

Your car must be a 97 the fuel gauge is the wrong way....

Sorry to hear that, Craig.

I've had mine for about 3 years now... no problems...

You did use the 2 pop rivets per side, right? I guess the surface for the double-sided tape wasn't clean enough to hold... You can use pop rivets there (it's kinda hidden away) if you want to be extra sure it stays on... I could only imagine the sound of running over it as it came off

well at least you'll be able to get it all back together.
use rivets in the middle section...towards the back. it's not 100% pretty...but this won't happen again.

But their is something to be about. Now I won't look as special when I go to get my 60k service at nissan.

Parents can be surprisingly nice sometimes...

who installed the lip originally?? sounds like all they used was some double-sided tape. I used x5 1" screws from underneath across the entire front, then two more on each side where it wraps into the fender and on top of that 3m bdy molding tape along the entire lip

$hit i snow-plowed my driveway with it the other day and it held fine, even last week i hit a crater in the street and bottomed it out and held fine, eve at 100+

sorry to hear about that craig, but at least you going to get a new one.

this is one of the reason why i hate the stillen kit. cheap tape on crap. that's why i'm eager to see how shadow's kit will look like, it will be a whole bumper kit instead of cheap tape on crap like stillen.

i do suggest what ny96max did to his front lip. more is better.

Me and my dad did.

We used 3m tape along the topside of the lip, and then just the 2 screwes where it wraps into the fender. We drilled through that fenderwall. I guess metal isnt enough

And yes cumalot the $tealin' lip I got from avalon came with nothing. It came in a barebones box not wrapped or anything. Oh well at least its cheep-priced. So I wouldn't know about the cheep stealin tape

WOW! That blew! I'm glad to hear your folks are going to help out, that's cool. I heard of a guy with a Honda and his lip fell off, got stuck under the wheel and he lost traction. This caused him to loose control of the vehicle and crashed in the woods......Dead Honda!

Re: Front lip RIPPED off today on the highway!

Same thing happened to me but the story is that it was raining and in this trash city of new orleans if it rains hard enough it will flood so water was about 10 inches high so I gunned it and the force of the water ripped my off as well and I ran over it. As you guys can see in cardomain under Jay26 you will see the scratch on the lip. Lucky I didnt break it. But after I got off the car I didnt see my lip and then I go outside with water up to my kness I see a object floating towards me and my neighbor goes look your front bumper. The solution is use lots of 3M tape and use big round washers and it wont come off again.

Sorry to hear that your broke no worse you just painted yours

My lip is bolted on to the fenders. I then used 2 1" screws to hold the front up plus I fabricated a couple metal plates up underneath the front of the lip in case the lip was to come loose. These plates would then hold the lip up if the screws failed. I also used much better 3M tape from Home Depot. I've never had any problems. Sorry to hear about the accident.

For the future or for anyone interested in installing their own lip you MUST install screws in the middle on a 95-96. The 97+ should hold okay with the tape since the lip sort of rests on the edge of the factory bumper but the 95-96 just holds up against it. screws are a must.

i did the same thing craig - after i installed it i used just tape. luckily i was going slow when it finally fell off - i had to repaint it and everything and then reinstall it but i've had it for a while now with screws - no problems at all.

Sounds like the double sided tape wasn't attached properly to a clean surface? I've done the same setup with all of the tape in the center inlet and a rivet on each side of the fender well.
Many a time I have breathed a sigh of relief when I misjudged an on ramp and the lip flexed on impact but did not break nor crack. The tape is still going strong for me

Re: Front lip RIPPED off today on the highway!

When I went to KC, a guy with a dark burgandy Max with body kit, and SC. His lip kept falling off as well and he ran over it so many times. But it kept going back on. LOL!

That sucks about your lip but its also good that your pops is buying you a new lip.

For mine, i used some double sided tape, used 2 rivets in the middle & 1 screw on each end. Its still holding on great.

You are right, the deductable would be like 3 times the price of the lip.

Anyways I have mixed feelings about the lip. With it off now, I don't have to go so slow on uneasy roads. It's nice. But then again it looks so sweet...oh well ill be gettin a new one as soon as avalon ships it.
