Maxima has a Sport/Performance rating (insurance issues)

Talked to my insurance agent today about insuring my Maxima. It's over $2k to insure. When I asked what caused the insurance of the car to be so high I was told that the car has is listed as "sports/performance" by the insurance company. That coupled with higher than average repair costs and higher than average theft rates make the Maxima expensive to insure. In 8 months when I turn 23 the rates drop about $450.

I just turned 23...I hope and pray that I get the same kind of cut that you're talking about. $450 would be nice. I'm paying about $1400 now!

Are you quoting $1400 for 6 months, or 1 year?

The designation such as SE counts. So does 2-door vs 4-door so a 3.2CL would cost more than a TL.

I was on an insurance web site last year when we were buying the Max. The SE showed about 12-15% higher claim rate than GXE GLE. At the time we were looking at BMW and Audi and I was astounded at the high claim rates. The A4 was double the rate of comparable cars.

I don't have the URL. If I can find it, I'll post it.

I pay $850/year and I thought that was too much. I guess there are some advantages to being older & married(I would still rather be single and pay more though).

They always leave out their location when they say how much insurance is. You could be a 40 year-old single male with a clean history and you couldn't get $1400 in Crooklyns, NY. That'd probably be around 4500+ there. But 1400 may be alot in east jibit where liability is $89 and collision/comp another $9.95. Seriously I was fully covered for $685 once, now that I'm in Phila. all I can say is fuggetiboudit.

I sure hope you're talking in Aussie dollars, or you have several cars or something. If not why is it so high? Do you crash regularly or something?

There are many factors that affect you insurance.

Where you live
Where you work (and how far you drive to and from work)
...or school
Married/Single
MultiCar discounts
Passive/Active Alarm
Automatic restraints (seat belts in the 3rd gen SEs, for example)
Driver's Ed Class (cost = ~ $20; savings = 10%; varies by location)
Age
Occupation

I have 2 cars + 1 humongous SUV. Full coverage on 2 and liability on 1. I pay < $1000 a year.

Helps to have your home insured with same company too.

I'm pretty darn sure you have me confused for someone else. If you can find even one thread on this forum where I talk about racing someone or some crazy thing I've done in any car I've owned I'll be mighty darn surprised.

It's all relative. The boonies are good because sometimes it's just darn peaceful!! But sometimes there isn't much to do either.

I once payed $4300/month for an apartment, that was the going rate. It was a nice place and located midtown. It was fun and every night was partytime. Ok, before you think I'm rich the co. actually paid it and billed the client! hehe

Ain't nothing wrong with 37, I hope to be comfortable when I reach that age. The way the stocks are going I'll probably be homeless!

I got a better quote from Progressive for a single car policy than I did from AAA of Michigan on my parents policy with every possible discount AAA offers. So far Progress has been the cheapest at $2150 for a year (if you pay 6 months at a time). Geico takes up the other end of the spectrum at $4545 for the exact same coverage. Here's what I've got so far for a year for a 22 year old male with a spotless record on a 2k2 SE...

State Farm - $2550
Geico - $4545
AAA (parents policy w/ all discounts) - $2278
Progressive - $2150

I'm going to try seeing what American Express charges. I've heard their insurance is a good deal cheaper for younger drivers.

$2150 as Carrie Bradshaw would say is uninsurable. Seriously, on a car that carries a kbb of 23,411 (don't forget to subtract the rebate to get into the high 21's) who would wanna pay nearly 10%/annually to insure? It's one thing if the vehicle is needed to get to work, but every time someone mentions "parents" it's pretty

I'm not sure I follow your comment about "parents". I am buying the car with my own money. I use it to get to and from work everyday. I have a college degree and work full time as an Field Applications Engineer in the display business. I have a full time job and I can afford a Maxima and the insurance (even though it is expensive). I just happen to be living at home with my parents for a few more months so I can save up for a down payment on a house. Because I live with my parents I can put the car on their policy, however as I've shown that still is not the cheapest method of insuring the car.

Wow, full coverage 20 minutes outside of Boston costs me $614/year on a 97 SE. I'm 25 and single. With some of the rates quoted on this thread I don't think I could afford to drive. How do you guys do it and still have play money left over?
