Idle... is this normal?

Hey guys,

I was wondering if this is normal. When i have my car on and its just idling and im not moving... when i turn my steering wheel the car revs up a little bit. Is this normal with maxima cars? I mean I can clearly see it rev up and hear the engine when i turn the steering wheel. I took my car in like 2 days ago for some problems one of which was my idling and they said it was normal with maximas. Is this true? Another thing is my car would somtimes idle at about 700-800 rpms and then when i move and stop again.. at lets say the next stop light it den drops to about 500 rpms and idles there. Every now and then it changes its idle place. Sometimes its at 700-800 other times its at 500rpm. I just think its kind of odd how at one stop traffic light its idling at 800rpm and by the next traffic light it drops down to 500rpms and vice versa. Is this also normal? Nissan just adjusted my idle setting when i took it in to them and they said everythign was fine now. Does any of this seem normal to u guys? I drive a '97 nissan gle maxima with about 48k miles on it. I've had it for about 6 months or so. Any feedback would be appreciated.

All the symptoms you described are normal. No need to worry.

What makes the engine jump is the Idle Air Control Valve, called the the AAC valve by Nissan. It allows a small amount of extra air into the engine to compensate for power steering, braking and a/c. 500RPMs is a little low for idle, you may want to raise it to about 7-800RPM if you have trouble with stalling or anything like that. Nothing big to worry about though.
