300zx brake question

i have had my 300zx brake conversion since the past summer with no problems. i have rebuilt my calipers, and have also milled down brand new powerslot rotors to spec for the conversion. i'm running porterfield r4s pads all around. it wasn't til recently i started getting crunching noises when i brake. i could be completely stopped and would hear crunching noises as i lightly depress the pedal and engage it again. the sound is coming from my front left corner. is anyone else with the brake conversion experiencing this? i know of only one other member with the brake swap that has the same problem. there are visible fluid leaks and the brakes work fine. just has that funny grinding/crunchign sound.

Re: 300zx brake question

Crunching noises? I've had my setup for over 2 years now, and never heard a crunching noise. My brakes drag a little. Have you checked to see if there is anything stuck in the caliper? It's hard to understand what you mean by crunching, just one of those things that you have to hear to understand I guess.

yeah it's definately one of those sounds you gotta hear to understand.. i checked the calipers but i don't know what's wrong wiht it yet.. i'm planning to take apart my brake this weekend or something and see what's causing the noise.. i was only asking to see if someone might know what was wrong with it.. but then i guess there's no real way around it, i'll still hafta disassemble it.. thanx tho shadow, for your feedback.

My wife's Jimmy had similar "crunching" sound with pressure applied and not moving. It was play in the sliders of the caliper assembly.

hrm... that sounds like what may be causing the sound, but weird thing is i don't have sliders, but i have this one spring thing that guides the caliper.. maybe that is dirty.. i'll see.. i'm going to do all i can to make that sound go away before i take the caliper apart. then again it's a good time for me to flush out my brake system. My brake fluid is filthy.

easy fix. Pull out the pads and put brake grease on the backside of the shims & and the sliding pins. The Z32 calipers get the crunching noise when the grease gets dried up (or if it's not there)

the pins eh??? cOOl thanx.. i pulled out the brakes today and i regreased the shims, it made the creaks worse. but i'm still not sure of what is causing it. i sanded down the pads just a bit just incase they were glazed. NO leakes were aparent.. i'll try greasing themz pins.. thanx everyone for your feedback

why not grease the sliding pins when you took the pads out? You know what I'm referring to, right? It's the two pins about the size of your finger that go into the caliper than the pad (at each end)

i thought of it, but then thought, "i never greased this when i first installed em' and it didn't creak at all" so i just cleaned the pins off and put them back in.. i didn't clean them real good tho.. OH yeah another way to describe the sound is it sounds like a series of clicks.

you might want to remove the calipers and check for rubbing on the inside. Mine rubbed when I braked because the rotor edge rubbed the inside of the caliper.

well... oi just pulled the pins out today and really washed them, i took a wire brush and sprayed the sucker with brake clean, got it all nice and shiny and coated it with anit seize.. i still get the wierd grinding noise...i have a feeling it's my piston in one of the caliper.. well i guess i'll leave it alone for now until it starst leaking.. cuz i mean.. there's 4 pistons in each caliper so 3 must be working fine.. it could be a rough spot...

TillEys99: my calipers are not rubbing on anything.. i checked for scratches cuz i thought my caliper might have been lose (turtle95max suggested it) but it's fine..
