5 speed tranny leak :(
Last night was toying around with my car and I was looking underneath when I noticed tranny fluid on the tranny housing. The leak is on the drivers side housing and it's leaking out where a rubber covered cable/line enters into the tranny. The cable/line is routed into the housing through a half-dollar shaped "cap" that has a small retangular gap at the bottom. This retangular gap is where the fluid is coming out, I think. The leak is very slow, but it still makes me a little worried. Does anyone know what this is? Access and replacement of this piece looks fairly simple.

Ohhh..I think you're right. It probably is the speed sensor. There's a phillips head screw that holds the piece in place. What sucks is if I have to replace it, I'm gonna have to replace my fluid too!!! I just replaced the fluid 5 months ago!!!

Hmm on a 3-gen manual, the speed sensor is on top of the pass side cv joint area? But I think I know what you are reffering to. Just drain the tranny fluid into a clean container and then pour it back into the tranny. Take the sensor out and see if it's loose or if the seal area is damaged.

No..heres what it is
Its the back up light switch/sensor..Mine was leaking also
last year (after I replace the fluid with RedLine) when my
97 5 sp was still under warranty...I had Nissan fix it.
It is not the speedo cable. They replaced it, drained out all
my new Redline oil and replaced with the OEM trans fluid.
I can scan in my Nissan paper work tonight if needed.
The PN's and description of the work is on the paperwork.
Hope this helps...

I had the same problem
It's called the transmission switch, for the reversing lights. Mine was so subtle that you wouldn't even see the oil on the ground. It would cling to the casing since gear oil is 80W90. Took two tries for the dealer to fix it, and I took their word that it was done. Then I looked under the car 4 months later and sure enough it was still leaking.
The part number is 32005-17E11 and since mine was done under warranty I'm not sure how much it would cost.
