question about the stability of compressing older springs?
question about the stability of compressing older springs?
When I am going to change my suspension should I be worried about my springs snapping when I compress them. I have a 1995 maxi and it has been in the buffalo area. lots of rust because of the salt and precipitation.
Re: question about the stability of compressing older springs?
No, if they were going to snap from compression, they would have already. Just driving your car compresses the springs as much or more than the spring compressor.

my friends were so bad on his 89 CRX that we used a big hand grinder and cut them in half while there were still on the car, one was snapped to begine with, the others were bad. i figured they could jump anywhere being attached to the shocks, it was a fun night.

So you don't acually know what compressing the springs is for? The point is to take the whole spring and shock asemmbly compress the springs and then remove them. Either to replace them with something else or to do some form of work.If you want to drop your car, you don't want to "compress them", you want to get new springs that are shorter overall, like eibach, h&r etc. or coilovers, and it's a good idea to get new struts and shocks.
some of you guys are real a$$holes. It is a legitimate question. people I know have had horror stories of springs snapping. I have seen older cars springs snap when all that pressure is applied. I was asking concerning a maxima.
