HLSD Add On
HLSD Add On
I bought a new Maxima a couple of months ago and am very happy with the car. After reading about the HLSD advantages both on dry and wet streets I decided to look into having a new differential installed in my tranny. I would have waited for the HLSD models, but I needed to make the purchase when I did. I called Nissan, however, and was told that having the factory HLSD installed after the fact wasn't possible. I am hoping that there might be a way of having a limited slip diff installed - I looked into the quaife option, but $1500 is getting cost prohibitive, and also I am concerned about voiding my tranny warranty. Does anyone know if having a nissan diff installed is likely, or if Nismo might offer such an upgrade? Also what would installation fees look like? Sorry so long, but thank you for any ideas or advice.

My prob was I specifically told my sales man that I wanted a 6spd equipped with HLSD..,, at the time I didn't know to much, so when I took the car off the lot I had no clue that this was not equipped in my car. Since then I have learned quite a lot, and will never make mistakes like this again...
Right now there isn't much you can do, I am not sure about this but from what I have heard, in order to install a HLSD, your gonna have to do a lot of modifying to your tranny and change a bunch of parts to the trans, engine and entire system. Installation and parts is gonna be costly and is pretty much not worth it.
Remember HLSD is great for cornering but can kinda turn into a pain in the @ss, cause the back of your car doesn't really follow the front to well without proper modifying... You can have instances where if you take a corner hard the back of the car tends to hop and bounce inward to stay straight, without good suspension this could cause probs.
I recommend not getting a HLSD aftermarket installed unless you really want it and if you are gonna do serious racing with proper modifying of the car. If your doing casual driving your not really missing much It's a bomb enhancement if it comes installed, but you probably don't really need it.
My New modified Honda has a HLSD and I only feel it going around corners it keeps the car straight but other than that i see nothing different.
Also try doing what I plan on doing for now on when there is something you want get as much info on it you can, you may find that you don't want it.
Hope this helps a little cause I know just how you feel I was in the same boat a few weeks ago.. Again I am new to this So I hope all this info is accurate as far As I know everything is top notch, but I could be off on some things.

I think the reason Nissan told you that you can't add the diff. was due to housing differences. HLSD tranny housing must be slightly different internally, aside from the Diff itself.
But what stops you from purchasing an entire HLSD tranny from Nissan?
I'm sure that just bolts right up to your motor making it a easy swap. Then maybe you can sell your new-used tranny back to a Nissan Dealer or even on Ebay. See if you can work out a deal with them.

that's what I am doing, just got the tranny today, 1980 with an employee discount and tax, mines for a 97 but the parts guys said I could order either one for the same price so i got the 97 tranny with LSD, all I have to do is buy some axles

did you pull that from an I30? I'm looking to get a differential too. I drove my friend's Type-R, test-drove a Sentra V-spec and I'm aching for an LSD.
