PA Turnpike is not 18" friendly

Here we go again! I look at my rear-left rim and there are 3 scratches, I'm like WTF? The sidewall had a white mark, like chalk, but when I wiped it away the rubber was not scuffed. 0 chance I scraped a curb. 3 scratches on the rim, 2 on the surface where the weight would go on a traditional wheel, and one near the center cap. The scratches are about oh, 1/3 the width of a dime. I'm gonna touch them up with some alloy wheel spray that I have. Even if it doesn't match only I'll know the scratches are there. If you go all out and spend 800 or more per rim, I think this cr** would be very annoying! DOT needs to undersstand there is an 18" revolution going down, and they need to keep debris off the road. The new generation of high performance drivers are doing 40-series or less, many are even 35-series.

Saw a brand-new SL500 today up close. Sweet. 276-35-18 in the rear with x-drilled rotors. Vents in the hood. Hate to scratch that bad-boy.

what part of the turnpike were you on? I live in SW PA and travel that road often and some parts are a lot worse than others.

That stinks. Nothing hurts more than seeing your purchases get all abused with nothing you can do about it.

I drove from Valley Forge to Harrisburg and back. It was weird because I had never been that far west in PA before. They don't have emissions stickers out there, that's not really fair, everyone should have to pay the outrageous fee...hehe

BTW I just touched up the rim as best as I could, and I used an envelope with a bill inside as my brush. I let the paint accumulate at the corner and then I used it to apply the touch up. It worked pretty well. The Volvo touch-up paint actually matched exactly, I don't know if silver rims are a standard color or what.

I'm glad to see so many people going for the 18's, I think they look great and are fun to have. As I said 2 weeks ago, GET YER 18'S ON!!

I'm sorry but the PA turnpike sucks. Supposedly it's because of construction to make it better. But the strange thing is, it looked exactly the same as I saw it a few years previously. I recently came thru the NJ turnpike(<--now THAT's a turnpike) and took a roadtrip west. The PA turnpike only got somewhat decent on the very western end by Ohio. The Ohio turnpike is Bad ***, too.

Re: PA Turnpike is not 18" friendly

I-80 in Bay Area not 17" friendly. I have a weird compression stress mark in a wheel from hitting a "repair" that felt like slamming a curb.

Man, let me tell you this---if you drive on I-295N in Jersey be careful as well. I slammed a pothole and hit a piece of wood today, thanks goodness my Sumitomos are ok!! hehe

Alot of roads are not cool for a40-45 series rubber.

You got it Phuong. If you're worried about road conditions then PA is the wrong place to be. That's another reason why I want to move to FL. A recent survey of national road conditions said the top 4 major metropolitan area for road conditions were Atlanta, Orlando, Jacksonville and West Palm Beach. Maybe in a couple years...
