Raced my uncle's 2003 SL500

yeah thats right...2003

i was at his house watching the final 4 and he wanted to show me the hardtop go down. so we went outside and he told me to take it for a spin. my friend Ryan was with me so we drove around for a while but i wanted to run by my house to pick up my camera to take pictures of a Lambo in a near by parking lot. so we went by my house and got my camera and i let Ryan drive my car back to my uncles so i wouldnt be stranded there.

So....i am in my uncle's SL500 and my friend is Driving my 2K2. we pull onto the highway that my neighborhood is off of. he's in front but comes to a dead stop in the highway (no one was coming obviously) i pull up next to him. im yelling at him to go but he doesnt hear me so i just take off. he was ready. he launches it. he's a half a car ahead of me at the end of first, then he shifts to 2nd and i gain about 1/2 a car and when he shifts to 3rd i gain another half of a car then we shut it down at about 70. i was about 1/2 to 3/4 cars ahead of him. the SL is automatic so no errors on my part. he was thoroughly impressed and so was i. makes me feel good to know i have 2 extra doors (and 3 seats) and saved about $65,000 and my car could still keep up.

My Uncle's arsenal:

here's the lambo for those who are curious

What a collection of cars! I'm really surprised the Max even kept up (let alone was a head for a small portion) with the V-8 at highway speeds!

I was just reading Car and Drivers review of the new SL500 and they ran the 1/4 mile in 14.3 at 99. That is one tenth slower than my best 2K2 6spd time and the exact same trap speed. This from an automatic car that weighs alot! Those cars are so nice looking. Ofcourse you could buy a Maxima, Frontier, and 350Z for that price!

Uncles, Aunts, Moms, Dads,Cousins, Sisters, Brothers, Grandpa, Grandma, Nepthews, ect... Pick one, two, or all

They always seem to have a nicer car than you.

Nice run! But to his defense, his car is still new and MB products usually don't fully break in until 5K+ miles

i live in an area with a lot of winding roads but since the car isnt mine i wasnt about to do anything stupid. just taking turns pretty normally i noticed it was very stable. no body roll whatsoever. obviously a very noticible difference from my car.

Nice

But I think you would have a bit of a problem at HWY speeds, well until maybe 157 mph..

Too bad your buddy doesn't know how your car very well! A properly driven 6spd should smoke a pig 500SL through 3 gears.

Not the new SL. Look at the times they are putting down.

Re: Raced my uncle's 2003 SL500

So when your uncle hands you the keys, does he say "Please break it in for me?" With his collection, I doubt he says "Be gentle. She's never done this before ..."

He only took the car upto 70MPH or so, so it's okay I guess. Besides, if his Uncle is nice enough to hand over the keys to a teenager for a Spin-Around-Area, then he should be cool for a lil' racing too.

Are they putting down low 14's? In the real world at real tracks and not in mag time world? What are the mag world times?

when i drove the S55 when it was about 2 weeks old he kept telling me to punch it. if he knows what "breaking a car in" is, i dont think it matters to him. he will probably sell them before they've even got that many miles on them anyway. he just sold his '96 Carrera with 7,000 miles on it. but he very rarely keeps a car for more than 2 years. he's had 10 different cars in the last 2 years that i can remember.

There are different theories about break in anyway. One is slow, the other fast. Fast break-ins entail more risk of shortening the component life, but maybe if you do shorter oil changes etc. it might not be so bad. Hey, if your uncle wants to give away a low mileage car (or sell it for a song) I'm interested
