How do you determine the condition of your auto tranny?

I have 110k miles. I've had my car since mile 5, and I did ONE neutral drop so far, but I did drive my car quite hard in city driving, especially after getting my ypipe. Of the 110k miles, at least 40k is all highway driving. I flushed my tranny oil at 70k, and the fluid is still pink.

I'm gonna drive my car til 300k, or til the chassis falls apart, and I'd like to know the soundness of my tranny, but I'm a total noob in that area. But my engine is in excellent condition. Doesnt consume single drop of oil, and it seems to get smoother as it ages.

any advices?

one way is gear slippage. This happend to me in my 93 maxima, i dont really remember what would happend, but like when it would change gears into second, it would pause for a second, and then give a little jerk, and then change into second...it was f-ed up...

Sounds to me like you have taken great care of your car. Keep the tranny fluid clean, I'd put it on 30K change intervals if I were you. 70K is a bit to much.

Drive your car smart, drive it hard if you like but be smart about it. Don't over heat the tranny, don't do burn outs, don't do neutral drops.

If all is fine at 110K, your probably going to have that tranny for a long time. A buddy of mine had a Mazda MPV, over 300K on the original tranny. Sure the shifts weren't as "tight" as they should have been, but it drove just fine, right smack into the car in front of him one day, which ended the MPV's life.

Keep it clean, drive it smart, but most of all - ENJOY THE RIDE!

It sounds like you're old school about maintainance which is good. Maintainance is the key to longevity in our cars. A tranny cooler always helps keep the heat out of the tranny which goes a long way towards keeping it running good. Unfortunately, the tranny is the achiles of our cars but if you don't over abuse it it will last a long long time.

Reving the car up in neutral and then slamming it into gear. This is very bad.

Put your tranny in Neutral, rev that baby up, and shift the tranny into Drive!
Tons of fun!

The best thing to do if you want to kill your tranny quickly.

The best ways is to check the color of the transmission fluid, what does it smell like (does it smell burnt?), & even take off the transmission pan and see how much metal had been collected by the 2 magnets in the pan.

If the magnets look like a pin wheel w/ metal shrapnel...its gonna die soon. If they've been nice and clean, then yo its ok.

Sounds more like your tranny will be in excellent shape, why the questions now ? Are you planning on adding some more speed ?

Honestly, maintenance is maintenance, and as long as you stay on top of it, your car will be fine.

Hey Synki, how's the 6spd TT machine treatin ya ?

-When do I get my shot ?

Its just that I am very paranoid about my max.

I smelled burning smell from my tranny ONCE during 110k miles. I'm assuming the smell was coming from the tranny.

I did like a 0-100 run 4,5 times in a row, and I smelled something burning, and it had to be the tranny. I'm just worried that I caused an excessive damage during wild session.

I'm paying $400/month for my baby and I wanna keep it for a long long time.

Synki, nice, if you do get the S4, get in contact w/ Jason (wht2kmax) he just got a 2000 S4, and he's been going a bit S4 crazy. His friend has S4 Avant, and they always looking for a good "run."
The Pike, again ?

hokiemax, brakes could be burning, tranny, tires, its all components of a great cocktail called DESTRUCTION OF CAR.

Trannies that are on their way to the rebuilding farm will often slip, as described here.

Gonna pop my question in as well....

My tranny is relatively stiff. When the engine is cold shifting from 1st -> 2nd small delay then slight jerk. When the engine is warm its butter smooth. I'm guessing my tranny is dying?

Normal to me, just keep on top of maintenance and you'll be fine. Race like me, or like I used to, prepare for headaches.

Don't worry about that. I've heard the same complaint from sooo many 4th gen owners. Mine is the same way. In the morning, there is a small delay and a jerk but it doesn't seem to slip (the rpms do not rise). When the car is warm, butter smooth. Been doing this forever (over 30K!) so I'm hoping nothing changes
