Taught a Gen1 Acura CL driver not to mess with a Maxima

So I'm at this light stopped in the right lane out in front. There's one lane on the left, and then this little lane on the right that merges with my lane maybe a hundred yards or so after the light. I look in my side view and sure enough there's a car on the roll that's going to try to blow past everybody at the light and use that merge lane. It's a Gen1 Acura CL. He's going a good 20 mph or so and just coming up on me and then the bloody light turns green so that he didn't have to stop!

I drop the clutch and then bury my right foot and surprised the shia out of this Acura guy. He was definitely trying. At the top of first I had matched speeds with him and we were side by side and then I chirped BIG TIME into 2nd and literally jumped in front of him after that and left him and then he gave up. I had it up to about 50-60 or so by the end of the merge lane.

Now here's the funny part. I looked in the rear-view mirror to see where he ended up and this guy in the Acura was clapping at me with both hands out through his opened moonroof!

So the big question is, what the hell does that mean?

It could have meant...

haha...nice chirp buddy! (thumbs up)

Or it could have meant...

smooth move, a$$hole! (mad)

LOL...who knows. But anyways, that was my fun story from the day.

PS - got my Max all fixed up over the weekend from when it got hit in a parking lot a few weeks ago. Sanded down and painted over the bumper. New OE right-rear tail lamp assembly, patch on the rear quarter panel, and some painting there as well. Looks good as new!!Total cost came to $250. I'm sitting on a check for $550 so I pocketed a y-pipe. mwahahaha

You guys are amusing

Steve....usually when my friends and I clap for someone it's because they did something really stupid....no offense to you....I don't think what you did was stupid.

http://www.deskshare.com/link/1640/Video1.asx

Note the awd still chirping while pushing the gas at over 10 m.p.h.

Oh btw, second gear goes all the way to 80 m.p.h.

80mph????? That is weird. It seems most manufacturers limit 2nd to around 60mph or so.

I figured it was probably the "smooth move a$$hole" clap (polite middle finger). But hey, any day I p!ss off a Honda/Acura owner by beating them is a good day in my book. I'm happy now. mwahahaha!

Thanks guys

When people do that normally it means, gee you really impressed me. Probably means, he wasn't even running you. I have seen that too many times here. Those older gens are slow anyways, 16 sec cars. lol

How do you chirp the tires? I squeal the tires when starting in 1st sometimes, but do not know how you chirp in 2nd? Normally the clutch and gas are pressed at opposite time. So can I assume one would chirp the tires when the clutch is engaged while the gas is still applied?

The clap...may be he was dance to 'rasputin'.

To chirp the 1-2 shift, come of the clutch fast while hitting the gas hard!

I hope you are not talking about a 2.3L 4-cyl CL (or heaven forbid, one of the EARLY 2.2L 4-cyl CLs). That's not even worth racing.

The older 3.0L V6 CL's were interesting. They had the previous gen Accord platform but that Accord never had the 3.0L engine (only a 2.7L V6).

One time I went to NYC to hangout with the NY members down on DPA and when I got to the Bronx, some knucklehead in a first gen CL rolled up on me quick while on RT95. So I played with him a bit. I'd floor it and pull away from him. Then I let him get in front and I pulled on him again, then he got the picture.

Russ, will I need to post my Acura pic again?

Note, I never claimed that I "killed" him. I know the Gen1 CL's are slow, even the 3.0 V6's which of course only came in automatic. I'm not sure what it was since I was never behind him

The 3.0CL has the same exact engine as my Accord V6 did - the J30A1. Trust me, it's nothing compared to the VQ. I've owned both so I would know. Your auto max should smoke it and my 5spd would positively shame it

Actually, the 5-spd Max pulls VERY hard compared to the automatic. The 4th gen Maxima auto is VERY close to the auto V6 Camry and Accords in acceleration. Between all three AUTOMATIC sedans, they don't really "smoke" each other. Now 5-spd, the Max is much faster.

A couple of guys over at AccordV6.com (my second home ) have raced autotragic Maxima's and the results have not been very pretty for them. Even with mods. They fear Maxima's

But it's not too far off...
Took wifeys car down the stip a few times...
And it put down consistent 15.60-15.70 E.T's...
Not like 15.6 is fast by any means, but it's quick enough to hang with most stock auto maximas.

I can take both camry & accord off the line, by the end of first gear I'll be ahead of both cars forsure, but I'm not sure if the maxima can keep up with the camcord after 100mph.

You make it seem like the autos are much slower than the 5 speeds. Don't for get that there are some 4th gen autos that are low 15 runners. Hell, I want to see if I can hit 15.4 while being stock.

At speed, the auto Max wouldn't kill a CL or Camry but it would definitely pull on those cars. Now put them all in a 1/4 mile run and you'd see how much faster an auto Max is compared the the others decribed.

You'll still pull

Accord V6's upshift to 4th at 100 mph after which they go absolutely nowhere. If the driver knows to hold it in 3rd manually you can squeeze 116 out of 3rd, but you're struggling with an engine whose power curve drops off like a rock beyond 5500 rpm (redline is 6300).

I think automagic Max's hit up to 130 mph in 3rd, right?

When I was watching that Pike video there's no way in hell my Accord V6 auto would have been able to keep up. Even with the automatic Maxima's!

I didn't "chase him down". He was chasing me down. I merely closed the door on him, and it's not my fault he couldn't keep up!

Respectful kills so far: Probe GT 5spd w/mods. Camry Solara V6 possibly 5spd up to 120 mph.

Respectful "hangs": 2 modded Mustang GT 5spd's (pre-99), and a WRX that I stayed dead even with from 30-80 mph.

I test drove a '99 3.0 CL when I was planning on buying my car. That thing is nowhere near a Maxima. There's no comparison.
