Possible '97 Maxima (Minima) recall........

Looks like the NHTSA is looking into recalling 1997 Maxima's (Minimas)
for alternator fires among several other possible recalls listed in this AutoWeek article.

Vehicle population: 123,000.

"x is the number of cars in the field

y is the cost of the average settlement

take x multiplied by y and you get z

if z is less than the cost of a recall, we don't do one.."

and all our maxima buddies burn to death leaving fried fat on the seat

"now that's what i call modern art!"

Hmmm, my alternator hasnt blown up yet, but knock on wood. With my luck it probably will. Considering I beat the F outta it with my super stereo.

However, it wouldnt be the first time my car was on fire......

I had an alternator replaced at about 60k on a 97' SE. They told me it was very unusual because the casing (I think) on the alternator was MELTED.

I had an alternator fire on my 97' SE 5 speed, driving up the 5 North in Anahiem at about 60mph. I had my windows up and air conditioning on. I smelt a lil smoke at first, then saw the smallest stream of smoke coming out of the right corner or my hood near the windshield, pulled off on to the shoulder poped the hood and blew out a 2 inch flame on the copper wiring. Took the car right over to my shop slapped a new one on. The alternator was the factory one and I had about 80k miles on it.

My alternator sucks

My alternators is almost dead. It whines so loud and on two different occasions it started smoking. I'm almost ready to replace it but if theres a recall then thats good for me. How would i Know if there is one and how would i go about replacing it if there was one. Any update on this topic would be great. Also are there any other recalls for the 1997 maxima that you guys know about?

My alternator crapped out on me two years after purchase... >>

...of the car. Replaced it with a Reman unit...no problems ever since. Characteristic sign of failure was a loud buzzing/whining noise from the alternator...at any speed.

I found this to be funny...

1997 VOLVO S70, V70

Problem: Fire erupts from front seats, possibly from power adjustment mechanism or seat heater.

Glad I didn't use mine to much when I had those cars.

Would this include 98s too? I assume sombody will post if there is a recall. I have a whining noise that may be the alternator, if I could get it replaced free it would be cool.
