Suspension Choices

I know that most people here think that there are no good choices as far as shocks for the maxima other than Koni's which are pretty hard to find but i had some questions about this. How bad are the tokico's, if i will not be autocrossing or racing, just doing normal driving on the street, maybe performance oriented sometimes, but still just street driving will the tokico's be ok. i want to get H&R springs so i can lower the car and am wondering what i should do as far as shocks. I am basically just looking for a shock that will give me a nice feeling shock for a long time to come, i dont need it to be the ultimate in performance.

By the way, for all who know me from before and care, as of monday last week, my maxima officially became mine and is now standing right outside my condominiums so now it is my car.

Most people...

Well, it's hard to say what most people like.

A lot of folks have started complaining that after 10K miles or so, the Tokico's went from being really good, to not so great. Hence the bunch of folks looking to go with Koni's (though they're more expensive and require a modification to work in a Maxima).

Read on down a couple days to Keven97SE's comments about his new Koni fronts vs his Tokico's (which he didn't have for too long...under 20K I think I remember him saying).

I'd try it with stock shocks and see how you like it... I'm not sure if anyone's given the KYB's a shot, they're not a performance shock but they may do pretty well with a less performance oriented spring like the H&R's. I've never heard of anyone using them though...

hmmm, it really does seem like

the koni shocks would be the best choice but how hard are they to find. I remember it being really hard to get them, are they readily available now and if so what is the mod that is required to get them to work. i think i remember that the rears are just like any other shock upgrade but you gotta cut something off the fronts or something. Also, does anyone sell shock and springs together with the springs already mounted so when i get them i can just install the system and i dont have to go somewhere to get the springs compressed and whatever else is needed to mount them?

Cattman's coilovers are the closest to pre-assembled, but you still need a spring compressor (one the rears only though). Honestly, I dunno what everyone complains about spring compressors for, it wasn't that bad. I went to pep boys, they're free to rent ($60 deposit, refunded when you bring it back in 7 days). Just strap it to the spring, and take a wrench and tighten it down for a little, took me < 10 minutes to compress, dissasemble, and reassemble the new shock. Hell, if you had an impact wrench it'd be even faster. A socket would help too, but you need a really long socket to get over the threading...

anyone know about getting koni's? Who sell them and how much are they, and what mods do they require?

Ask Keven97SE. He is currently installing them.

cattman

it's not worth it to get cattman coilovers, they're expensive and the struts aren't that great, for the same price you can get tein suspensions from japan. look under the aplication of cefiro. it should if fine.
