my friend drove home drunk last night. he ALWAYS give us the:

"im fine."
or the
"trust me..."
or the
"believe me..."

the rest of us always fight with him about it but he never listens. we all want him to get into a small wreck or get a DUI so he learns his lesson so he doesnt kill himself or someone else. just stupid. even i got a ride home last night after having like 4 beers over 4 hours.

That is why its called a drug. It impairs your judgement and makes you do things without thinking about them. So think twice about driving before drinking people, because you are liable to drive afterwards as well

sorry to hear that bro...feel your pain. plain & simple DONT DRINK & DRIVE. Fucck every time I drink even if I'm buzzing alittle I'll either have a sober friend drive or crash where ever I've been drinking at. First off I have friends who had DUI's & its a couple G's you gotta spend for sure on lawyer & court cost. Second, one of my counsin's friend died drinking & driving, so I kinda learned from that b/c from when I can remember he can hang really good drinking, but I guess it caught up to him. Third, I LOVE MY CAR...cant sacarfice it or my or someone else life b/c life is too BEAUTIFUL!

First of all, I am not perfect, i have drank and drive before in my life. Just after one scary night, i decided to never do it again, and i have stuck to it.

My friend died in november, single car accident, drinking and driving, i thought everyone in my town would learn, and everyone would remember him and not do it anymore, i went home for winter break, and people still hadn't learned.

The thing is, yelling, and lecturing people about it don't do anything. People don't take stuff like that to heart. It is really a personal decision for people who have problems doing it. The best way is to tell them that they are being selfish by doing it. They are not the ones who often have to deal with the consequences. They either die, or they kill someone and the loved ones have to deal with the pain, so when you take someones keys, and refuse to give them to a person, that is your right as another person, you will never be sued in court for taking someone's keys when they are drunk.

MOST IMPORTANT!

This is not an individual thing. This is our culture's fault, DUI's are a big deal when you get caught, but really, what's a thousand dollars, and 6 months of driving compared to lives, it doesn't compare, and that is why people continue it.

What we need to do is look at different countries laws for ideas. Take for example Sweden or the netherlands (not sure which one). First DUI offense, you lose your license for 5 years. Second offense, lose your license for life. Third offense, death penalty. There drinking and driving numbers are next to nothing, because their culture has a DUI ranking up there with many worse things, so that is why. So it will not change on a large scale until something dramatic changes. All you can do is pray for the family, and know that the person has moved on to other loved ones who have already passed.

Newman:

Which would you rather have?
A friend who's pi**ed at you for a while for turning him in? (and if he stays pi**sed -he's not really a friend, anyway)
Or a friend who's dealing with injuring or killing someone?
Or a friend who's in a wheelchair or is a vegetable?
Maybe you'd like to go to this guy's funeral.

Sorry to be harsh, but reality sucks sometimes.

I think that would be a great law... it would cut down on DUI like crazy!

I'm never usually around, but my nephew tells me stories about him drinking and driving... he's a moron and doesn't seem to understand how dangerous it is. He's told me stories where he remembers slightly swerving off road, then waking up and sudennly he's up this snow bank. He looks around, no cops, back up and continues going home! ugh! everytime i tell him he's going to kill himself, everytime he just says "bah" and that's it. real **** off i tell you. we need laws that are much more stict than the current ones!

I agree with a bunch of things

1) DUI laws need to be MUCH tougher. I lost my grandma to a DUI driver who crossed the double yellow and ended up with only 90 PROBATION...where is the justice in that? Crappy justice system and an EXPENSIVE lawyer...thats how.

2) A friend will never let another friend drive drunk. Period. Like what was stated in the original post...give up the macho crap. Take the keys. Period. Another post stated that you will not be sued for taking keys from a potential DUI. You are being a better friend that that person might realize at the time.

3) The loss of a friend to DUI(or any other death) is hard. I lost a friend in high school to a self inflicted traffic accident (no drugs/alcohol involved). It was difficult to get through, you have my deepest condolences SiverMax98.

Until people have it happen to someone close to them or even themselves never really understand or learn. Our culture should hang its head in shame.....

sorry to hear that....

I have a cousin. Around 10 years ago, when he was around 25, 3 of his best friends were killed, all at once, in an accident. They were in a van, and coming back from a trip or something...

After that, my couz just went crazy, ended up doing even more drugs, and he literally became crazy because the drugs messed up his brains. He is on rehab now, and seems almost normal now.

Luckily most of my friends never drink and drive but one has before twice and I constantly yell at her and tell her to just call me and I'll pick you up no matter what but she's too concerned with getting home on time and her parents not finding out she got drunk. No matter how many videos they show us at driver's ed people are still stupid enough to do it.
